Rafa Mir has endured a turbulent spell at Nottingham Forest since arriving on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

The Spanish striker joined the Reds on a season-long loan deal, hoping to make a real impact and impress Nuno Espirito Santo, as well as helping Forest push for promotion to the Premier League.

But the 22-year-old faces an uncertain future on Trentside just halfway through his loan spell, having been recently linked with a move away from the City Ground.

Here, discussing Mir's season so far and this latest speculation in greater detail, is FLW's George Harbey...

Sum up Mir's season so far in just one word?

"Underwhelming.

"Mir arrived at the City Ground with big expectations placed upon his shoulders - he hadn't experienced the best of times at Wolves thus far, but they forked out £2m to beat Real Madrid to his services a couple of years ago.

"He was a regular goalscorer for Valencia's academy side, but since his move to Wolves, he has made just four first-team appearances, and has failed to make an impact since joining Forest too."

Why do you think it hasn't worked out for him?

"Lewis Grabban's form is a major reason as to why Mir can't get in the team.

"The 31-year-old has been on fire for the Reds this season, scoring 10 goals in 20 games and producing a string of clinical performances for Forest up top.

"Sabri Lamouchi's system only accommodates for one striker up top, and Grabban has showed that he can perform the lone striker role much more effectively than Mir."

How has he performed when he's played?

"Mir has made just two Championship starts for the Reds this season, and on both occasions, he has looked well off the pace and has been unable to get into the game.

"He has come up against two physical sets of defences in WIgan Athletic and Millwall, but both times he has failed to compete with the centre-halves and has been unable to use his aerial threat to full effect.

"Even when he has come off the bench to try and cause havoc late on, the 22-year-old has failed to cause any danger and use his physical prowess to the best of his ability.

"He never looks like scoring."

Why is his future currently uncertain?

"According to reports from El Periodico de Aragorn, Mir could be set to be recalled by Wolves in January and be sent out to Real Zaragoza. Whether that would be a loan move or permanent switch isn't revealed in the report.

"Zaragoza's main transfer target, Atletico Madrid's Dario Poveda, has recently suffered a cruciate ligament injury and will not be joining the Spanish Second Division outfit.

"The striker isn't likely to be a regular starter for Forest in the second-half of the campaign, whereas the whole point of a loan spell is to play regularly and gain experience.

"He's 22 years of age and needs to be playing week in, week out, and he might feel right at home back in his home country for Zaragoza."

Can you see him leaving Forest?

"I'd say it's very likely and the report claims that he's all-but certain to depart the City Ground.

"Forest are expected to bring in another striker in January, having been linked with the likes of Lawrence Shankland, Dwight Gayle and Guillaume Hoarau already.

"Wolves cannot be happy with Mir being a back-up striker to Lewis Grabban, however there is no way that the latter will be benched, having scored 10 goals in all competitions this season."

How do you think Forest fans would feel about this?

"Forest fans would undoubtedly snap your hands off if you offered Mir a way out of the City Ground.

"They have absolutely hammered into him on social media this season and I don't think you'll find a supporter out there who is backing his corner.

"But whilst this may look like a no-brainer of a decision for Forest, they have to be careful here. Getting rid of Mir would leave them with one striker in Lewis Grabban, and even if they bring in another, it still leaves them with one striker.

"An injury to Grabban could then be detrimental, as then they would be back to square one again. If Mir went, I'd say that signing two strikers is a must."
