With the future of star striker Josh Maja still up in the air, Sunderland manager Jack Ross has confirmed the Black Cats are interested in signing Wigan striker Will Grigg, as confirmed on Chronicle Live.

With Maja having rejected the latest Sunderland contract offer, Ross is moving for Grigg as he looks to maintain his side's promotion push, to get back to the Championship at the first attempt.

So how badly do Sunderland need Grigg?

We discuss.....

Jacob Potter

"They desperately need him.

"Grigg is a proven goalscorer in League One, and with speculation linking Josh Maja with a move away from the club, Grigg’s goals will be needed.

"If the Black Cats can’t strike a deal for Grigg, then I seriously fear for Sunderland’s promotion chances this season."

Chris Gallagher

"They desperately need him.

"Even though they have scored in every game, the goals are not flowing like they used to.

"The chance to bring in a striker who has scored for fun at this level time and time again is a no-brainer."

Jay Taylor

“Considering they are without a win in three games and Josh Maja’s future is still up in the air, they need another option.

“Grigg knows league one, and he would add another element to their forward line.

“I wouldn’t say they are at the stage of desperation, nowhere near it, but it would be highly advisable to get this deal sorted sooner rather than later.”
