With just over two weeks to go until the start of the new EFL season, Sheffield Wednesday are looking for a new manager, after Steve Bruce left the club to take charge at Newcastle United.

Bruce took charge at Hillsborough in February, replacing Jos Luhukay who was sacked in December and was able to guide the Owls to a top-half finish in the Championship last season.

The 58-year-old emerged as the favourite to take charge at Newcastle last week, after Sam Allardyce turned down the chance to succeed Rafa Benitez at St James’ Park.

After holding talks with the Magpies last week, Bruce resigned from his role at Hillsborough and his appointment at Newcastle was confirmed, leaving Sheffield Wednesday with just over two weeks to appoint a new manager before the new season.

The Daily Mirror’s live transfer blog (17/07, 19:58) claimed that the Owls have drawn up a five-man shortlist of potential candidates as they begin the search for Bruce’s successor.

Garry Monk, Gary Rowett, Gary Megson, Chris Coleman and Daniel Stendel are all understood to be in contention for the role at Hillsborough, after Chris Hughton reportedly ruled himself out of the running for the job.

The Owls’ caretaker boss Lee Bullen has also expressed an interest in the job, after his two previous spells in temporary charge.

In this latest FLW Six Pointer, we take a look at the managerial situation at Sheffield Wednesday...

How much of a blow if it for Sheffield Wednesday to lose Steve Bruce?

“It’s a massive blow for Sheffield Wednesday to lose Steve Bruce, especially so close to the start of the new season.

“Bruce is a vastly experienced manager and he showed in just few months at Hillsborough that he was capable of achieving success at the club.

“I fancied Wednesday to challenge for the top six under Bruce next season, so it’s a major blow for them to lose him and it’s really difficult to see where they go from here.

“They will really struggle to find a good replacement for him and whoever they bring in will not have a lot of time to work with the players ahead of the new season.”

Where do Sheffield Wednesday go from here? Who should they appoint?

“It doesn’t matter which way you look at it, Steve Bruce has screwed Sheffield Wednesday over here.

“Through no fault of their own, the Owls now find themselves in a very difficult situation and it’s difficult to see where they go from here.

“They need somebody with experience and somebody who knows how to rebuild a squad.

“Chris Hughton knows exactly what it takes to achieve success in the Championship and I think he would have been the perfect appointment for the Owls, although he seems to have ruled himself out of the running.

“I think Daniel Stendel would also be a good choice, but I can’t see Wednesday going for somebody who is already at a club because of the time constraints. It would just be too complicated and they can hardly afford to waste time.

“Garry Monk is the obvious choice out the other names who have been mentioned. He’s got plenty of experience in the Championship and did a good job with Birmingham City on a limited budget.

“Lee Bullen would be a decent option but he has no experience as a full-time manager, so his appointment would have to be considered a risk for the Owls.”

Would Gary Rowett be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday?

“I’m not convinced Gary Rowett would be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday, to be honest.

“He did a decent job with Birmingham City on a limited budget, but his last two spells in the Championship with Derby County and Stoke City have been disappointing.

“Stoke were one of the favourites for automatic promotion at the start of last season, but Rowett failed to deliver on those expectations, despite making several big-money signings.

“Wednesday will be hoping to challenge for the top six next season and I’m not convinced Rowett is the right man for the job.

“On top of that, the Owls need an appointment that the fans can get behind and I can’t see them getting behind Rowett after his previous two spells in the Championship.”

Does Lee Bullen deserve a chance to manage Sheffield Wednesday?

“I think Bullen could actually be a decent appointment for Sheffield Wednesday and I’d like to see him given a chance, but I think the Owls will look for somebody with more experience.

“Bullen is a fantastic coach and will have learnt a great deal from working alongside three different managers throughout his time at Hillsborough.

“Wednesday need a quick appointment and Bullen is somebody who already knows the club very well and he will know how to get the best out of the current group of players.

“He did a decent job in his two previous spells in caretaker charge with Wednesday, but he has no experience as a full-time manager, so his appointment would have to be considered a risk.

“Whoever the Owls decide to appoint, I think Bullen deserves the opportunity to remain as a first-team coach at Hillsborough if he wants to.”

Would Garry Monk be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday?

“I think Monk would be a decent appointment for Sheffield Wednesday. He’s probably the obvious choice out of all of the names on their shortlist.

“He’s got plenty of experience in the Championship and will be used to working with a limited budget, which will suit Sheffield Wednesday as they are currently under a ‘soft transfer embargo’.

“Monk was sacked by Birmingham City last month, after a reported fallout with the club hierarchy, so that could be a concern for the Owls.”

Would Daniel Stendel be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday?

“I think Daniel Stendel would be a fantastic appointment for Sheffield Wednesday, but I think they will find it very difficult to persuade him to leave Barnsley after the success he achieved at Oakwell last season.

“Even though he’s never managed in the Championship before, I think he’d be able to achieve success at Hillsborough.

“He did a fantastic job with Barnsley last season and sometimes it’s easy to forget that it was his first season in English football.

“He has been able to get Barnsley playing exciting attacking football and I think he’d be able to replicate that at Hillsborough.

“I think he’d be a fantastic appointment for Wednesday, but I just can’t see them getting him to leave Barnsley.”
