Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews has revealed that he believes that Luton Town are currently overachieving in the Championship in relation to their budget.

The Hatters have made a positive start to the 2021/22 campaign under the guidance of manager Nathan Jones.

After drafting in a host of fresh faces in the summer transfer window, the Luton boss has recently led his side to eye-catching victories over the likes of Coventry City and Millwall.

A brace from Harry Cornick sealed all three points in last Saturday's showdown with the Lions as the Hatters moved up to 10th in the Championship standings.

Luton could potentially close the gap between them and the play-off places this evening if they produce a positive performance against Derby County at Pride Park.

The Hatters cannot afford to underestimate their opponents who are only bottom of the second-tier due to the fact that they were recently docked 12 points for entering administration.

Ahead of tonight's meeting with the Rams, Andrews has praised Jones for the job that he is doing at Luton and has insisted that the club are currently overachieving at this level in relation to their budget.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Sky Sports EFL Podcast about the Hatters, the former Republic of Ireland international said: "They are in a good place.

"They are always going to have those bumps in the road and maybe come unstuck but that's just the reality of where they are at.

"They are overachieving for the budget that they have at this level."

Andrews later added: "I think they are adaptable, they play in a different type of way depending on where they're at themselves.

"So look, overall, he [Jones] has them playing very, very well and they are tough opposition.

"You very rarely get given anything cheaply by Luton."

The Verdict

When you consider that Luton have only lost three league games in the Championship this season, there is no reason why they should not target a push for a top-six finish next year.

Whilst the Hatters will need to work on their consistency, they do have players at the club who possess a wealth of experience at this level.

Set to face Derby tonight, Luton will be determined to deliver the goods in-front of their travelling supporters.

Providing that the Hatters go on to seal victory in this clash, they could potentially use the momentum gained from this result to climb the second-tier standings in the coming weeks.
