Derby County's six-game unbeaten run came to an emphatic end last time out, as Aston Villa secured an impressive 3-0 victory over the Rams at Pride Park.
Whilst the manner of the defeat will have concerned Frank Lampard, the rookie boss has made a positive start to life in management.
The East Midlands side are certainly in contention for promotion and there run in the League Cup brought a lot of admirers.
However, the Villa game highlighted once again that there are weaknesses in this side and January could be an important month for the Rams as they look to bring in that extra bit of quality that they need in key areas.
And, that will have a knock-on effect, with players sure to leave.
Here we look at TWO Derby players who need to impress before the window if they are to stay at the club for the remainder of the campaign...
The former Reading defender is fourth choice centre-back for Derby and in all honesty, it seems highly unlikely he will get a chance between now and the New Year.
But, Pearce has to continue to impress in training and his opportunity may arise.
Injuries and suspensions can occur as the games come thick and fast after the international break and Pearce will need to take any chance that comes his way.
Similarly, defensive midfielder Thorne finds himself way down the pecking order at Derby and has only played U23 football this season.
Yet, his talent is clear as the 25-year-old has shown in the past he can be a quality operator at this level.
If he stands out in the 23s then Lampard may consider giving him a chance in the hectic upcoming schedule.
