Millwall have had a solid season in their first campaign back in the Championship, tucking themselves in just behind the promotion contenders without fear of the drop.

It could get much better for them too, they've hit form just at the right time and have an outside chance of promotion. Of course, it is only na outside chance and the likelihood is that they'll be a Championship side next season.

That will still represent success for Neil Harris and the team, the Championship is a notoriously hard division in which to compete and simply holding their own against some big spenders is worthy of praise. They'll be plotting how to do the same next year and maybe, how to go one better.

Something Millwall have always prided themselves son is their youth academy, finding the finest players in the South East London area and moulding them into players worthy of a first team spot.

FLW looks at four players who may well be troubling the first team picture next season.

Twardek has been around the squad for a short time and even has two appearances to his name this season.

He's been out on loan gaining experience with Carlisle United and he's been ever-present since joining them in January as they've entered the League Two play off race.

He's primarily used as a winger with bags of pace and the ability to drop his shoulder and beat a man. He's also got international experience, playing for Canada right through to senior level, making his debut against El Salvador in September 2017.

Like Twardeck, Brown is also on loan at Carlisle, he joined in August and has made 30 appearances for the Cumbrians.

Brown is 20-years old and plays as a centre half. At over six-feet tall he cuts an imposing figure and is comfortable playing the ball on the floor as well as in the air.

He has appeared once for the first team, in last season's Checkatrade Trophy, but with increased exposure to first team football he's grown as a player and could well be looking for a first team spot next season.

Chesmain is another out on loan, he's playing National League football for Boreham Wood. He's progressed through the youth ranks and has just one appearance in Millwall colours, two seasons ago against Bury.

He's a left-sided defender, comfortable operating in the left back or wing back role, a valuable position which there is often a shortage of. His time at Boreham Wood hasn't been the best, he's made just three appearances at Christmas for them.

Chesmain did feature for Welling last season 12 times, but he's surely approaching the time where he must be a feature in the first team scene, otherwise what is the point of being out on loan gaining experience?

Leighton is a centre forward who has appeared regularly for the U23 side led by Kevin Nugent.

The 20-year old hasn't got any first team experience as yet, but he did sign his first pro deal last summer, with an option of an extension this coming July.

Leighton has been in good form for the U23 side and surely will be chomping at the bit for a first team chance. Fans love nothing more than 'one of their own' breaking through, so perhaps Leighton could be next year's good news story.
