Reading's activity in the transfer market last season was disappointing to say the least.

Orlando Sa found the net just five times after arriving from Polish champions Legia Warsaw before being flogged to Maccabi Tel Aviv in January for a £400,000 loss, and Matej Vydra looked a shadow of the player who was banging in goals for fun at Watford.

However, there was some shrewd business. Paul McShane and Stephen Quinn provided Premier League experience and goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi won the club's Player of the Season award. The trio were arguably the best signings made by the club that summer, and all 3 were signed for free.

This shows that it is not how much you spend but how wisely you spend your money that counts in the transfer market, which will be encouraging to Jaap Stam, who will be forced to work on a minimal budget.

Here are FOUR signings who would undoubtedly improve Reading next season...

Bradley Dack

Gillingham's talented playmaker had an absolutely outstanding campaign last season, and won the League One Player of the Season award for his efforts.

However, the Gills just missed out on the Play-Offs after an excellent start to the season, and Dack could well be on his way to a Championship side.

Whilst at Gillingham, Dack struck up a great partnership with Dominic Samuel, who was on loan from the Royals, and reuniting that partnership would be a great move from Stam.

Kemar Roofe

Another player who shone bright last season was Kemar Roofe, who like Dack was the standout player of his division, winning the League Two Player of the Season award after firing Oxford United to promotion.

After his outstanding season it seemed like every club in the Championship wanted to bring in the winger, but if Reading could beat off the competition and land the 22-year-old then they will have acquired a replacement for Nick Blackman, whose goals were never replaced after he moved to Derby.

Sergi Canos

Liverpool's Spanish midfielder is still undecided if he wants a move away from Anfield, but it looks like his time at the club is coming to an end with Klopp looking to bring in several new additions in the summer.

The Royals are just one of many clubs currently interested in the Spaniard, with an asking price of around £2.5 million on the table.

Canos has proven his playmaking ability with an excellent loan spell with Brentford, and this would be much appreciated at Reading.

Sone Aluko

The Nigerian striker was released by Hull City at the end of last season, much to the surprise of Championship fans.

Aluko has bags of pace, but also the ability to finish off a chance too, which is unsurprising, considering his sister is Eniola Aluko, Chelsea Women's star striker.

Reading are in desperate need of a new striker, with Dominic Samuel, Yann Kermorgant and Deniss Rakels the only current options, and Aluko could fit this bill perfectly.
