Reading’s activity in the transfer market last season was disappointing to say the least.
Orlando Sa found the net just five times after arriving from Polish champions Legia Warsaw before being flogged to Maccabi Tel Aviv in January for a £400,000 loss, and Matej Vydra looked a shadow of the player who was banging in goals for fun at Watford.
However, there was some shrewd business. Paul McShane and Stephen Quinn provided Premier League experience and goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi won the club’s Player of the Season award. The trio were arguably the best signings made by the club that summer, and all 3 were signed for free.
This shows that it is not how much you spend but how wisely you spend your money that counts in the transfer market, which will be encouraging to Jaap Stam, who will be forced to work on a minimal budget.
