It is 16 years since Sheffield Wednesday were able to be called a Premier League club but one more win this weekend will end all those years of hurt.

At the worst Wednesday were stuck in the doldrums of League One, but this Saturday will see them take on Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final for the final place in the Premier League.

The Owls are a club with terrific support and during the 2016/17 campaign they have been one of the more entertaining sides to watch in the second tier.

Blessed with a wealth of players who can light up a football stadium on any given day, the Owls also possess the best squad right now that they have had for years.

This summer is likely to see another plethora of talent come through the Hillsborough entrance, regardless of whether or not they win promotion, which could see several players depart the South Yorkshire-based outfit too.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at THREE players who will surely leave Sheffield Wednesday during the summer....

Lewis McGugan

It is impossible to imagine the former Nottingham Forest midfielder sticking around at Hillsborough next season, especially considering his lack of game time since making his move permanent in the summer.

The central midfielder performed well enough at the back end of last season during a loan spell, to tempt Wednesday into signing him permanently but a glut of other signings have seen the Nottingham-born player fall down the pecking order.

At 27-years-old McGugan is way too good to not be making the first-team squad on the day of a match and that is what the player is doing at present.

McGugan possesses a decent range of passing and has the potential to score top quality goals, making him a useful player for most Sky Bet Championship clubs.

Caolan Lavery

Caolan Lavery

The young Canadian-born striker has not really been given much of a shot in the first-team at Sheffield Wednesday and his future looks likely to be in League One or Two in the short-term.

Lavery spent three months of the 2015/16 campaign on loan with Portsmouth and netted four goals in 13 games for the club, doing enough to suggest that he would be comfortable playing regularly at that level.

Given Wednesday’s financial backing from their owner, it is hard to imagine them not spending another chunk of money in the summer, which could force Lavery further down the line when it comes to playing matches.

The striker is now 23-years-old and if he is to make a solid career for himself in professional football he needs to go and play regularly somewhere other than Hillsborough.

Jeremy Helan

The uncompromising Frenchman has played over a century of games for the Owls and has been a decent servant since first arriving on loan in 2012.

His time could now have come to leave the club however, such as been the impressive form of Daniel Pudil, who has made the left-back slot his own during the current campaign.

The 24-year-old went on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the season and was impressed enough to suggest that he could do a job for a Championship club again next season.

A former France U-19 international, Helen is strong in the tackle and has pace in abundance which allows him to bomb forward at freewill.
