Last season ended in heartbreak for Wednesday as they lost out to Hull City in the play-0ff final, however manager Carlos Carvalhal will be confident that that the squad he has this season is capable of going one better and achieving promotion this time around.

Though, the Owls haven't had the best of starts to this campaign and currently find themselves in 19th place going into the first international break of the season.

Wednesday will be hoping to get their promotion push back on track this Saturday when they come up against newly promoted side Wigan Athletic at Hillsborough.

This article is going to take a look at three players in the Sheffield Wednesday team that FLW writer Chris Strawson believes are overrated......

Steven Fletcher

The first player to kick off this article is Steven Fletcher who is a new signing at Hillsborough this summer, despite not costing the club a transfer fee, there is no doubting that the Scottish international will be on hefty wages, and in my opinion it is questionable as to whether the 29-year-old is overrated.

I am not questioning the frontman's ability and have no doubts that he is a very good player, although it appears that he may still be living off the reputation of past seasons as his recent form hasn't been very good at all.

In his final three seasons as a Sunderland player he made 65 appearances and managed just 12 goals in that time, hardly a return worthy of a £12 million pound price tag.

I am all for players proving me wrong and wish Fletcher every success this season with the Owls.

Marco Matias

Portuguese winger Marco Matias arrived at Hillsborough last summer for an undisclosed fee and penned a four-year deal with the club.

A lot was expected of the wideman after he arrived off the back of a very successful season in Portugal, where he scored 20 goals in in 36 appearances for top flight side Nacional.

He has since failed to live up to the high expectations set out for him following his arrival and enjoyed a very much indifferent campaign last time out.

He scored a wonderful volley against Leeds United which turned out to be a goal of the season contender but injuries and form resulted in him being limited to only 18 league appearances last campaign.

It remains to be seen as to whether Matias can kick on during his second season in England, and he will be certainly hoping to improve on his goal return of just 3 last season.

Jack Hunt

Former Huddersfield Town full back Jack Hunt has obvious attacking qualities, and excels when in the opposition half of the pitch, although what is also obvious is that he has clear defensive issues, which can leave him open to criticism and is what in my opinion makes him overrated.

The 25-year-old can often be found making marauding runs down the right hand side of the pitch and it is these runs that often leave him out of position, and unable to recover, and as the primary job of a defender is to defend it opens the floodgates for criticism.

If Hunt's defensive issues can be ironed out then there is no doubting he could be a top quality full back as he already has all the attacking know how needed, but it remains to be seen as to whether he can be moulded into the all round full-back.
