Sky Bet Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday appear to be suffering a hangover from their exploits last season, with the Owls currently languishing down in 19th place in the league table.

The Owls were tremendous during the second half of last season and some ruthless form saw them go on a superb run to the Championship Play-Off Final, where they were narrowly beaten by Hull City.

This season hasn’t been great thus far and since beating Aston Villa on the opening day at Hillsborough, the team are winless in four league games and were also embarrassingly dumped out of the EFL Cup by Cambridge United.

Despite a sticky start there is enough quality in the Owls squad to suggest that they can ensure that their current form is just a blip, with their supporters hoping to be in the promotion picture come the end of the campaign.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at three underrated members of the current Sheffield Wednesday squad.

Jack Hunt

The former Huddersfield Town right-back is a unsung member of the current Sheffield Wednesday squad and his energetic displays always catch the eye.

Hunt was a trainee with the Terriers and his form over four years playing for the first-team earned him a big move to Crystal Palace.

A broken ankle and a series of managerial changes meant that his time at the Eagles was rather unsuccessful and loan spells with Barnsley, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United ensued.

Now settled with the Owls, Hunt is a big player for the club and his ability to bomb forward is a useful asset for the team.

Ross Wallace

The Scottish winger was signed by Wednesday from Burnley back in 2015 and it was initially expected that he would be a member of the squad, rather than a regular starter in the side.

Last season however, Wallace established himself in the side and netted three goals from 37 games putting in several tireless displays to aid the team’s cause.

An experienced Championship player, Wallace netted two crucial goals for the Owls last season after notching in both legs of the play-off semi-final against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Wallace’s experience will prove crucial to Wednesday over the coming weeks as they look to come out of their current slump.

David Jones

Eyebrows were raised when Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal turned to Burnley defensive midfielder as the man to marshal his team’s back four over the next few months.

Jones made the switch to South Yorkshire after three years and 124 appearances for the Clarets, departing following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

The 31-year-old was sent off against Brentford at the weekend but his presence in the team will be important over the next few months, with his promotion credentials set to be an invaluable source of experience for Wednesday.
