Sheffield United have performed above expectations this season, and they will want to build on that next season so these three players are at risk.

The Blades are in with a chance of finishing in the play-offs in what has been a memorable first season back in the Championship. Chris Wilder has formed a well-drilled, hard to break down side in his time at the club.

They have prioritised buying players who can fulfil a role in the team rather than just talented individuals. This has allowed Wilder to use the limited depths of his squad effectively in order to get the utmost out of his team.

However, some players haven't been up to the required standard so far which means they need to finish the season strongly to have any chance of being at the club next season.

Here are three players whose positions are under threat...

Evans returned to the club in 2017 but has failed to have much of an impact this season with just nine appearances in the league and no goals to show for it.

United have Leon Clarke, Billy Sharp and Clayton Donaldson as well as James Wilson on loan from Manchester United fighting for the striker position, so Evans has been unable to make much headway.

He is likely to be fourth in the pecking order next season and offers United little currently. The fact that Wilder brought in Wilson on loan and has used him ahead of Evans means that he doesn't seem to feature in Wilder's future plans.

He needs a move away to rejuvenate his career with the Championship probably being a step above his quality.

Wright joined the club in 2016 and played a key part in their promotion-winning campaign as part of the centre of defence. However, he has only featured 14 times in the league with other options preferred even though United usually play with three centre-backs.

He is 32-years-old so he is likely to be past his peak which means age isn't on his side. His relegated role in the pecking order as well as the availability of younger options in the squad means that his time at the club could be coming to an end.

The leap from League One to the Championship is significant and Wilder now needs players who can help challenge for promotion to the Premier League which is a whole different challenge altogether. Therefore, there will be some outgoings along the way with Wright likely to be among them.

Heneghan was brought in during the summer to act as depth for the central midfield and centre-back spots due to his versatility. However, he has struggled with just one appearance in all competitions.

His inability to challenge for a first-team spot isn't beneficial for him or the team because it isn't aiding his development. Therefore, a move away would be the decision for him unless he is able to break into the first-team for the last few games, which is unlikely considering how important they are to United's season.
