Newcastle United suffered relegation to the Championship for the second time in eight years, having previously gone down at the end of the 2008/09 Premier League season.

Manager Rafa Benitez was appointed in March but failed to keep the Magpies in the top-flight, instead owner Mike Ashley has given the Spaniard the objective to win promotion at the first time of asking.

The former Liverpool boss made a number of big name signings during the summer, including Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace, Scottish international Matt Ritchie and Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark.

There has been a wide range of players at St James' Park who have impressed the supporters and look likely to guide the club back to the Premier League.

Newcastle currently sit 3rd in the Sky Bet Championship and are scoring goals for fun, however here are some players in black and white who are struggling in the north-east and are out of their depth....

Matz Sels

With Tim Krul out injured, Benitez was forced to go out into the transfer market to sign a new goalkeeper.

He did that, bringing in 24 year-old Matz Sels from KAA Gent in Belgium for £6.5 million.

After Newcastle's opening weekend defeat to Fulham, Sels impressed The Toon Army.

He kept four consecutive clean sheets in all competitions between the end of August and beginning to September.

Despite the form, Matz Sels came under a lot of criticism on social media following the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa after conceding a late goal from Aaron Tshibola. As a result, the former Belgium under-21 international was forced to delete his Twitter account

The following week Sels was dropped by Rafa Benitez in place for 25 year-old Karl Darlow. As a result I think he has struggled to fit in at Newcastle United and is definitely out of his depth. He has failed to make an appearance since.

Chancel Mbemba

The defender was set to be one of the upcoming talents in the Premier League when he joined Newcastle United last summer on a five year deal from Belgian outfit Anderlecht.

In his first season at St James' Park, Chancel Mbemba made 35 appearances but failed to keep the Magpies in the top-flight.

Since the start of this season the 22 year-old has played just six games for Rafa Benitez's side and some supporters have described the Democratic Republic of Congo international as very lacklustre and frustrating.

Mbemba has yet to feature since the middle of September, which suggests he is surplus to requirements. Captain Jamaal Lascelles, and summer signings Ciaran Clark and Grant Hanley are seemingly ahead of the six-foot tall defender in the pecking order in the north-east.

This suggests the centre-back is perhaps out of his depth at Newcastle United, and a move away could be the best option for Chancel Mbemba to fill the potential some have labelled him with.

Aleksandar Mitrović

A few years ago Aleksandar Mitrovic was labelled as one of rising stars in global football. However, it hasn't quite worked out for the Serbian international.

£13 million was the fee that moved Mitrovic from Anderlecht to Newcastle United in the summer of 2015, and he was thought to be the forward who could bang in the goals with the support of Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield.

In 40 appearances last season the 22 year-old scored just ten goals, which of course wasn't enough to keep Rafa Benitez's team in the Premier League.

This campaign, Mitrovic has played a part in seven games so far and only scored once, a poor return for someone with such high potential thought of him.

With the lack of goals, summer arrival Dwight Gayle has become first-choice striker at St James' Park. Despite the injury which kept Aleksandar Mitrovic out at the start of this campaign, the striker has failed to impress for the Magpies and some reports suggest the manager has a lack of trust in the agitated forward.
