Wolves had a very difficult season last year, failing to replicate the form displayed in the previous campaign.

Kenny Jackett began in difficult fashion, losing the prolific Nouha Dicko to a knee injury sustained in the early September, which put the striker on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

This was not helped by lacklustre performances and stuttering form from the likes of defender Dominic Iorfa, who wasn’t as good as last season where Wolves finished just outside the top six.

The goals dried up as Wolves had no natural goal scorer with Adam Le Fondre and Joe Mason failing to fill the void left by Dicko and eventually Benik Afobe.

Infact, it was left for midfielders James Henry and David Edwards providing a chunk of the goals due to the striker's absence.

Wolves recovered to finish 14th, respectable when considering the rotten form the Wanderers were in, but this was still a major disappointment and underachievement.

Manager Kenny Jackett was put under enormous pressure, with a rumoured multi-million takeover imminent, the manager is skating on thin ice.

Here, Football League World writer George Harbey identifies THREE former players who Wolves let go from their books, who would most definitely have a part to play at the club in present times, to fire Wolves back into the Premier League.

Bakary Sako

The Mali-born ferocious winger has been through it all with Wolves.

From relegation to League One, bouncing back and winning the League One title, and posing a massive threat to the play-off spots on their return to the Championship, it was heartbreak for the Molineux faithful when Sako chose not extend his deal with Wolves.

The powerful forward was named in the Championship Team of the Year for successive seasons, the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns, however expressed his desire to play in the Premier League and soon Alan Pardew came knocking on Kenny Jackett's door, and Sako moved on to Crystal Palace.

Making 118 appearances for the club, and scoring 36 times, Sako was a constant threat to Championship defences, and the formidable trio of Dicko, Afobe and Sako became noticed by elite English clubs.

Ever since his departure, Wolves have never really had that firepower and ruthlessness going forward, Michal Zyro signed from Legia Warsaw, however failed to step into Sako's boots.

Benik Afobe

Benik Afobe endured a season to remember in the 2014/15 campaign.

The former Arsenal man was the highest goal scorer in England in 2014/15, scoring 32 goals in total for MK Dons and the Wanderers.

And with Dicko out for the season, and Sako on his way to Palace, Afobe had to be the talisman all by himself finishing up with 46 appearances in total for Jackett's men, netting 22 times.

The 23 year old even finished up Wolves' top goal scorer at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, despite sealing a move to AFC Bournemouth in January.

The signings of Joe Mason and Adam le Fondre couldn't come anywhere close to Afobe's goal scoring tally, managing just 6 goals between them both playing 42 times between each other.

It would have been very hard to keep Afobe, due to his magnificent scoring record, however if they were to keep the talisman, and wait until Dicko came back fitter and stronger, then the strikers would have formed a fantastic partnership together and would have surely helped Wolves back up the table.

Wolves fans now crave a goal scorer, and who else would anyone but Afobe?

Matt Jarvis

Matt Jarvis

The 30-year-old who now finds himself plying his trade with Championship rivals Norwich City, could easily come back be the perfect candidate to replace Bakary Sako.

Although he may not have the firepower Sako has, his blistering pace and agility will be nothing but essential to the Wolves' attack, who used to terrorise defences down the flanks all the time.

The winger made 164 appearances for the club, and endured a season of winning the Championship in the 2008/09 campaign.

As a former fan favourite, Jarvis would no doubt lift the spirits at Molineux this term, and his style of play is what Wolves fans have been craving ever since Sako left.
