Coventry City prides itself on the production of good youth players but has unfortunately become a selling club in recent years.

The departures of Cyrus Christie, Franck Moussa, Callum Wilson, James Maddison, Aaron Phillips and Bassala Sambou in the past two years has really put a depressing dampener on the aspirations of Coventry fans.

It is often easy to forget now that Coventry were a top flight team for so long.

In 1969/70 the Sky Blues were promoted to the Old Division One and remained there until Gordon Strachan's side were relegated in 2000/01 to the second tier.

Following eleven years of flirting with relegation, Coventry were demoted once more to League One - where they have played ever since.

It has been 47 years since the Sky Blues saw a top 6 finish.

But with recent Championship football being played at Coventry, there is a wealth of former players that the Sky Blues could look to tempt back to the Ricoh Arena to help fire them back to the second flight.

Here are THREE ex-players that Mowbray could consider...

Joe Murphy

Coventry are crying out for an experienced goalkeeper and Joe Murphy fits that bill.

The twice-capped Republic of Ireland international spent three seasons at Coventry, playing over 150 games for the club.

He moved on to Championship club Huddersfield in 2014 but has only figured in 9 league matches since his arrival.

The Terriers' new boss David Wagner has also recruited goalkeeping duo Danny Ward and Joel Coleman, casting doubt on Murphy's future.

The 34-year-old Dubliner could be made available for transfer and a return to the Sky Blues is an attractive destination.

Current goalkeepers Lee Burge and Reice Charles-Cook are both young, inexperienced and would benefit immensely from someone like Murphy being around and imparting his wisdom.

Elliot Ward

Coventry are in desperate need of a centre back and Tony Mowbray wants him to fit a very particular profile.

Ben Turner filled that role last season on loan but has joined Burton Albion this summer instead.

Elliot Ward is another centre half who satisfies the criteria Mowbray is looking for: a strong, commanding leader who is also capable of playing on the floor.

The 6'1'' West Ham academy product is a powerhouse in the air but can also pass out from the back, which is perfect for Coventry's style of play.

The 31-year-old joined Blackburn last January but only made 7 appearances and new manager Owen Coyle might not fancy him.

If Coventry are serious about signing a decent centre back, they might have to cough up a fee to land their former star, who made 116 league appearances for the Sky Blues between 2006 and 2010.

Leon Clarke

Leon Clarkes

31-year-old Leon Clarke could make a return to Coventry, according to reports, and he is just the player that they need.

With the free scoring Adam Armstrong returning to parent club Newcastle and not short of suitors, he is unlikely to re-join on loan realistically.

Clarke has been a prolific goalscorer for his entire career and enjoyed arguably the best spell of his footballing life during his tenure with Coventry in the 2013/14 season.

He weighed in with a remarkable 23 league goals in 34 games and this is exactly what Coventry need to progress and fight for promotion.
