Sheffield Wednesday were a lot of people's surprise package last season as they managed to finish in the play-off places, despite finishing 13th position the season before.

Since the end of that campaign, the Owls have strengthened their striking options after bringing in Sunderland forward Steven Fletcher. The Scotsman has struggled to hit form at some points in his career, but Wednesday fans will be hoping that they will get the best out of the former Wolves man.

One position which Wednesday are relatively strong in is the centre of midfield.

With players such as Kieran Lee, who has the ability to produce inch-perfect passes, and Barry Bannan, who covers just about every blade of grass on the field, they have real quality in midfield.

Sam Hutchinson also does a great job of sitting in defensive midfield and protecting his back four, but they could arguably do with another player similar to the former Chelsea man.

FootballLeagueWorld writer Tom Rawcliffe chooses THREE central midfielders who would undoubtedly improve Sheffield Wednesday next season...

Adlene Guedioura

One man who could partner Sam Hutchinson in the deep lying midfield role is Watford man Adlene Guedioura.

The Algerian is no stranger to the Championship after featuring 76 times in the division for both Watford and Nottingham Forest.

His experience on top of his ability would certainly add a lot to the Wednesday squad. The 30-year-old also got promoted with the Hornets so he knows what it takes to get out of the division, which could prove valuable to the Owls as they look to bounce back from last season's play-off disappointment.

David Meyler

Another man who could fit the bill at Hillsborough is Hull City midfielder David Meyler.

The former Sunderland midfielder only managed to start 20 times for the Tigers last season and with them being promoted to the Premier League, it seems even more likely that he will be pushed out of the side.

The Irish international would also add a huge amount of experience to the side as he has actually featured in the top tier of English football 83 times.

He also has 56 Championship appearances to his name and, as well as Guedioura, he knows how to get out of this tricky league.

Tomás Podstawski

Podstawski

One ambitious alternative player, who almost nobody in England will have previously heard of, is Porto B youngster Tomás Podstawski.

The 21-year-old has featured 99 times for the Porto B team who compete in the second tier of Portuguese football. He has also featured three times for the Portugal Under-21 side and is likely to play for the senior team in the future.

A loan move away from the Porto B side might be just what Podstawski needs in order to grow into the player which his potential suggests he can become.

Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal is Portuguese himself, so he may be looking at young gems to sign on loan to boost Wednesday's chances of success next season.
