Reading's midfield department is a curious case.

The likes of Danny Williams and Oliver Norwood possess unquestionable ability, yet are frustratingly inconsistent, while the likes of Stephen Quinn and George Evans have shown glimpses of their talent, but have been unable to string together a run of games in the side for whatever reason.

Top this off with the situation surrounding Aaron Kuhl, who was dubbed as Reading's biggest talent, yet has been given limited game time, and several loanees including Lucas Piazon and Alex Fernandez whose performances were far worse than expected, and you can clearly see why Reading's central midfield department is in need of some fresh faces.

Manager Jaap Stam has recognised this problem, and his first move as manager was to bring in Joey van den Berg from Heerenveen.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Harry Smith identifies THREE central midfielders who would undoubtedly improve Reading FC...

Bradley Dack

The talented midfielder has established himself as a Football League household name over the last year.

He set League One alight with some outstanding performances, beating the likes of Max Power, Nicky Ajose and Will Grigg to the League One Player of the Season award.

Dack is the ultimate Football League midfielder, providing excellent passing ability and a constant goal threat from deep, who would be welcomed with open arms at Reading.

Tim Sparv

The towering 6 foot 4 inch defensive midfielder has proven himself to be an outstanding player in his time at FC Midtjylland, and became arguably the poster boy for the transition of 'Moneyball' into football.

One thing Reading really lack is a midfield rock - a man who can provide constant protection for the back four (unless you count young centre back cum defensive midfielder Denzell Gravenberch).

Sparv can definitely fill this role.

Jem Karacan

The Turkish midfielder was a true fan favourite in his time at the Madejski Stadium, and became the main cog of the side that won promotion in 2012.

Since he left the club to join his favourite team Galatasaray a couple of seasons ago, Reading have never really filled the hole he left.

Karacan has not got as much game time as he would have hoped at Galatasaray, and a return to Reading could just be on the cards this summer.
