After relegation from the Championship, last season was supposed to be the year that the R's walked the Championship.

However, it wasn't to turn out like that as they disappointingly finished 12th place.

Granted, losing main man Charlie Austin halfway through the season to Southampton rocked them, and with the captures of Jamie Mackie and Conor Washington not pulling their weight to the extent that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink would have liked.

The change of managers didn't help either, with Chris Ramsey departing in November, before Neil Warnock took caretaker charge for a month.

Off the back of that campaign, the QPR fans will demand a higher finish than last season, and a push for the play-offs certainly isn't off the books.

They start off at home to Leeds, before hosting League One Swindon in the EFL Cup. They have to travel to Barnsley, Wigan and Cardiff in August, and also host Preston on the 20th.

Here, in the opinion of FLW's Ryan Evans, are THREE central midfielders that would improve the QPR team.....

Jordan Cousins

The Charlton Athletic midfielder won the club's player of the year last season, in what was a troubling campaign for the Addicks.

Fans protests at the club's hierarchy off the pitch was coupled with a largely underperforming side on the pitch, and there was some turbulent times at The Valley last season, none more so than when hundreds of beach balls were thrown onto the pitch in the game against Brighton.

Cousins was one of a handful of players that did themselves justice, scoring twice, claiming one assist and winning man of the match twice from his 39 appearances.

The 22-year old definitely has the potential to be a top player, and it would be a major coup for Hasselbaink if he can get his hands on this young man.

There are plenty of Championship clubs interested in him, but QPR are believed to be leading the pack as they have already had a bid rejected for the Charlton man.

With this many clubs after him, it may be in his interests to leave south London and escape the toxic atmosphere.

Emyr Huws

The talented youngster started at Swansea City, before being spotted for the Manchester City youth team.

He never made an appearance for them, and a loan spell at Wigan resulted in a permanent move to the DW Stadium in 2014.

He only made 16 appearances for the club, and spent the whole of last season on loan at Huddersfield, scoring five and setting up three in 31 appearances.

Whether he will play next season for Wigan in the second tier is unknown, but QPR could have bigger and better ambitions that the Latics, whose main aim will be to secure survival.

Huws's game is all about running at the opposition defence with the ball, and that would add a different dynamic to this R's team, should he swap Great Manchester for Greater London. On top of this, he was linked with a move to Loftus Road back in February.

Nick Powell

Back in 2012, Powell ended a 13-year association with Crewe Alexandra to move to Premier League giants Manchester United.

However, things haven't quite worked out for the 22-year old, who was released by the club this summer.

As well as playing in midfield, Powell has played as a striker at times, and has a pretty decent scoring record at most of the clubs he has spent time at: 16 in 62 for Crewe and 12 in his loan spell at Wigan a few years ago.

The versatility that he possesses will give the club extra options, and Loftus Road could be the perfect stage for Powell to restart his career.
