It's been a decent start for Championship outfit Brighton this season who, like a cluster of other teams, sit mid-table with two wins, two draws and a defeat from their opening five fixtures.

Manager Chris Hughton will be hoping to lead his team towards another promotion charge as the campaign progresses and many expect his side to be up there when the play-offs roll around at the end of the season.

And whilst the club have conducted their transfer business tidily and quietly, here at the Football League World, we want to assess whether there are any hidden gems in this Brighton squad.

Not your Glenn Murray's or Anthony Knockaert's that have been tipped to do well again but some figures in the background that don't attract the headlines quite as much. After all, everyone loves an underdog.

So with that in mind, Hayden Atkins takes us through THREE Brighton players who are extremely underrated in this current Seagulls side...

Jamie Murphy

Former Motherwell midfielder Jamie Murphy struggled for game time last season and it was good to see him given the chance in the cup, where he duly slotted two past Colchester in the first round.

He hasn't had much first-team league action as of yet though and is normally named on the bench but if his performance in the cup was anything to go by, he could be an extremely useful player going forward.

We're not saying he should go straight into the first-team or anything like that but he's quick, likes to attack defenders and can score goals.

A solid option for the Seagulls going forward.

Oliver Norwood

You've got to give former Manchester United youngster Oliver Norwood heaps of respect for the way he's shaped his career since being let go from Old Trafford back in 2012.

After having loan spell after loan spell, he settled at Huddersfield Town and became a really important player in their side. A subsequent move to Reading followed and as of this summer, he plays his football at the AMEX.

At just 25-years-old, he has over 225 Championship appearances which is fantastic for a player of his age and shows just how useful he is in the middle-of-the-park.

He's a solid central player and will be important for the Seagulls if they're to mount any sort of promotion push.

His movement is good, he has a good range of passing and as we've seen in the past, isn't afraid of striking the ball from range.

Steve Sidwell

Steve Sidwelldv

Another Football League stalwart, Steve Sidwell has been on the scene for over 15 years since his release from Arsenal.

If there's someone you want in the middle of the part when the going gets tough, it's the former Reading man and he will know just what it takes if the Seagulls are to push for promotion again this season.

He's an un-glamorous, no-nonsense sort of player and will do well for Brighton after signing a one-year-deal this summer.

Not all heroes score goals and Sidwell will go about his business, sometimes with no-one realising he is there.
