Barnsley proved it was a season of two halves last season with completely contrasting fortunes during the 2015/16 season.

Their form at the start of the season was abysmal under Lee Johnson and after a 2-0 home defeat to Wigan they lingered in the relegation zone, despite having a talented squad.

They went on a run of 8 straight defeats before the turn of the year but in January and February they recorded an astonishing 9 wins in 11 games.

Irregardless Johnson left to take the Bristol City job and assistant Paul Heckingbottom took charge, this move did not halt their momentum only losing 2 more games from March onwards and on the final day an impressive 4-1 win away at Champions Wigan saw them sneak into the play-offs.

They brushed Walsall aside before outplaying Millwall beating them 3-1 to earn promotion to the Championship, to add to their Johnstones Paint Trophy win earlier in the season.

Their star man was top scorer Sam Winnall with 24 goals but the performances of Connor Hourihane, Adam Hammill and Alfie Mawson were excellent also.

They need to keep these players if they are too survive and here are THREE Barnsley players that will dictate their fortunes next season.....

Sam Winnall

Sam Winnalld

25-year-old Sam Winnall is the big hope at Barnsley who will have to come up with the brunt of the goals this season.

He finished as League One's third top scorer last season behind Ajose and Grigg with 23 goals.

He got very good service from Hourihane and Hammill and played well with a strike partner like on loan Ashley Fletcher.

After scoring for fun at Scunthorpe with 23 goals helping them earn promotion from League Two and has now helped Barnsley out of League One, and despite being linked to Championship clubs like Leeds seems determined to stay and confident Barnsley can survive.

Conor Hourihane

Conor Hourihane

The Irish midfielder joined Barnsley last season after impressing at Plymouth, and has been very good for Barnsley ever since.

He was their second highest goal scorer with 10 goals last season, mastering the box-to-box midfielder role as he fulfilled his defensive duties as well.

He is the captain, and manager Paul Heckingbottom praised his influence as a major contributing factor to their promotion which won him Barnsley Player of the Year.

Hourihane will be a fixture in midfield next season using his passing and vision to pick passes and dominate matches, definitely one to watch for next season.

Adam Hammill

Adam Hammillms

28-year-old winger Adam Hammill has had a chequered career thus far, becoming a bit of a journeyman in the Championship playing for Middlesbrough, Huddersfield, Wolves and most recently Rotherham.

After falling out of favour at Rotherham he returned to Barnsley in November and made a huge impact helping the side to promotion.

His 4 goals in 25 games and attacking play gave Barnsley the impetus they needed to transform their season, with the pick of his goals a wonder goal in the play-off final at Wembley in a 3-1 win over Millwall.

He signed a permanent contract and is looking to get his career back on track.

The winger has a point to prove next season as Barnsley try to survive in the Championship, a league Hammill has never quite cracked.
