Aston Villa were one of the sides in the Championship that everyone expected to come in and trump the rest.

Despite a horrific campaign in the Premier League last season, new manager Roberto Di Matteo came in, completely overhauled the squad this summer and seemingly instilled a sense of belief back in this Aston Villa squad.

But despite spending a sizeable amount in the transfer window on more than 10 players, Villa haven't started that well at all and sit in sixteenth place in the Premier League table.

They've only won one of their opening five games and suffered a poor defeat to a Bristol City side, they really should have dispatched at Ashton Gate.

So with some lingering signs from last season still in the Villa Park air, who can we look to after a slower-than-imagined start?

FootballLeagueWorld writer Hayden Atkins takes us through his THREE choices for most overrated player at Aston Villa so far this season...

Pierluigi Gollini

Signed for around £4 million this summer, Pierluigi Gollini was supposed to be the number one Aston Villa really never had last season.

But he's had a seriously shaky start to the campaign and some supporters are already calling for Mark Bunn to come into the equation.

Sometimes it takes time to adapt to a new country, a new culture and if we're being honest, a completely different style of football but Villa need results and wins if they are to be promoted at the first attempt.

Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew really needs to find his shooting boots if he is to stay in the Aston Villa side this season.

The high-profile and high-cost signings of Jonathan Kodjia and Ross McCormack mean he will need to do better than he did against Bristol City.

Villa dominated the first half and he had the chance to score at least twice in the first half opportunities he really needed to put away.

A good player but needs to hit the net more often if he wants to stay in the team.

Leandro Bacuna

Leandro Bacuna

One of the players who has actually managed to stay in the first-team fold after last season's horror show, but some still feel he's not quite up to scratch in this current Villa side.

With so many coming through the Villa Park gates the right-back really needs to up his game. It's not really his footballing ability that gets slated these days, more his attitude and ability to work hard for the team.

If there is something you need more than anything else in the Championship, it's a team of scrappers. Does Bacuna really fit this bill? Probably not.
