10 years ago, in the 2006/07 season, Reading took the Premier League by storm in their debut season in the top flight.

The Royals finished 8th in the top flight that season, but the following season Reading were relegated back to the second tier, after an 18th place finish.

In 2012, Reading returned to the Premier League, finishing at the peak of the Championship with a record 106 points.

However once again, the Royals came crashing back down, this time after just one season, with Brian McDermott losing his job in the process.

McDermott's replacement, Nigel Adkins guided Reading to a 7th placed finish, just missing out on the play-offs on the final day.

But after a poor start to the following campaign, Adkins was sacked, before Steve Clarke was given the reigns.

Clarke last just under a year as Reading boss before Brian McDermott came back to the Madejski Stadium, and this summer, former Dutch international Jaap Stam was appointed as the Royals gaffer.

Stam has had a decent start to his Reading career, he's seen his side lose just 2 of their opening 11 league matches, climbing to 8th in the league table.

Over the years, Reading have had some incredibly good players, but have also had some very poor players at the club. FootballLeagueWorld writer Rob Booth identifies the THREE worst Royals midfielders...

Royston Drenthe

Royston Drenthe joined Reading in 2013 from Russian side Alania Vladikavkaz.

Drenthe, a former Real Madrid player had previously had a loan spell with Premier League side Everton, however he failed to perform in a Reading shirt.

The Dutchman made 23 league appearances for Reading, scoring just 2 goals. This led to him going out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday in 2014.

Drenthe now plays for Turkish side Erciyesspor, the team he joined when he permanently left Reading in 2015.

Emerse Fae

Emerse Fae joined Reading from French outfit Nantes in 2007.

The Ivory Coast international made only 11 appearances for the Royals over 2 seasons, failing to score any goals. He also played in the famous 11 goals thriller at Fratton Park in 2007, when Portsmouth beat Reading 7-4.

Fae joined Nice in 2009 following a loan spell, but in 2012 he was forced to retire through injury at the age of just 28.

Hope Akpan

Hope Akpan signed for Reading in 2013, on a free transfer from Crawley Town.

Akpan played 63 times for Reading in all competitions, scoring just the one goal, which came in a 7-1 hammering over Bolton Wanderers in 2014.

However many Royals fans didn't rate Akpan, and in 2015 he left the Madejski Stadium, joining Blackburn Rovers on a free. He has made 8 appearances for Owen Coyle's side so far in 2016/17, contributing one goal in their EFL Cup win over Crewe.
