After the relative success Sheffield Wednesday achieved last season, many Owls fans are hoping Carlos Carvalhal can bring similar success in the Championship this time out.

It's been a decent start from Wednesday but their 14 point haul from nine games isn't going to blow the league away, and they'll have to pick up more wins if they're to keep up with the chasing pack.

We wanted to take a look at some of the worst Wednesday signings of recent times. Who has been a complete and utter waste of money?

With that in mind, FLW author Hayden Atkins takes us through the THREE most abysmal Sheffield Wednesday signings from the past 5 years...

Jay Bothroyd

One-time England international Jay Bothroyd made a six-month loan switch to Hillsborough back in the 2012/2013 season, and he's widely earmarked as one of the worst players to ever put on the Wednesday shirt.

He's never been renowned for his work ethic but it seems he took this to another level when he moved to Hillsborough. He was lazy, looked pretty unfit and only scored once during his spell there.

Pretty poor stuff and now, Bothroyd plays for Júbilo Iwata in Japan.

Mamady Sidibe

Another loan signing in the same season, Mamady Sidibe had been recovering from two successive season-ending Achilles injuries and was hoping to get back to form at Wednesday.

He signed a one month loan deal which was extended for a further month but he failed to really make an impact in Yorkshire.

One goal in nine appearances was never going to get the fans truly onside and unfortunately for the former Stoke City man, injuries continued to blight his career.

Now 36, Sidibe plays Sunday league football.

Martin Taylor

Taylor signed a two-year deal with Wednesday back in the summer of 2012, following their promotion from League One. He was supposed to be the man to keep things tight at the back but in honesty, he struggled to get near the first team.

He only made 13 appearances for Wednesday in his first campaign and he spent time out on loan with Brentford during his second season. He was released in 2014 and then retired from professional football.

It wasn't that he was disgracefully poor, but his spell was often deemed a little pointless by some Wednesday fans.
