Five years ago, Fulham were an established side in the Premier League and the 2011/12 season saw them finish 9th under manager Martin Jol.

Since then, the club has been taken over, relegated and had five different managers and last season, they only avoided the drop to League One in the final few weeks of the campaign.

Fulham fans have certainly had better times supporting their club and one of the main reasons for their recent failures has been poor player recruitment.

Despite suffering relegation, which in turn has led to a reduction in income, three of the club's four most expensive signings have come in the last five years.

Most of the managers in the last five years certainly cannot complain about not being backed in the transfer market, but while money has been available, the club haven't always been successful with their signings.

With that in mind, here are the THREE most abysmal Fulham signings from the past 5 years...

Konstantinos Mitroglou

Kostas Mitroglou

Starting off with the club's record signing, Mitroglou was expected to be the man to come in and keep Fulham in the Premier League after joining the club for a fee reportedly to be around £12m.

He was prolific in Greece but he played just three games for the Cottagers without finding the back of the net, and even though he only played a few times, he looked out of his depth in the top flight.

What made matters worse, Mitroglou was loaned out in the summer back to Olympiakos and then to Benfica when he told then manager Kit Symons that he didn't want to play in the Championship.

Bryan Ruiz

When Costa Rican international forward Bryan Ruiz moved to Craven Cottage from FC Twente, Fulham had signed on the most promising attackers in Europe at the time.

He joined in 2011 and spent four years with the club but when the club were in the top flight, Ruiz always looked out of his depth and the it looked like Fulham had severely overspent on the £10.6m fee they paid.

When the club were relegated, Ruiz impressed in the second tier with a number of eye-catching displays, but he will go down as total flop at Fulham because of his less-than-impressive displays.

Fernando Amorebieta

If a player spends three years with one club and appears in just over 40 games, he has obviously not impressed. This is the case with former Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta.

Unlike the others on this list, the Venezuelan defender was a free transfer from Atletico Bilbao and there was a lot of hype around his arrival but he was abysmal in his time at Fulham and deemed surplus to requirements by a number of managers.

He twice joined Middlesbrough on loan during his time with the Cottagers but the Teessiders cancelled his loan deal early in his second spell and he finally left the club this summer, despite Slavisa Jokanovic being open to handing him a lifeline.
