Birmingham City’s fortunes over the last five years have varied significantly.

They have managed to maintain their position in the second tier but have nearly been promoted and relegated since 2011.

Chris Hughton’s side finished 4th in the 2011/12 season and lost to Blackpool in the play-off semi-final.

The Tangerines eventually went on to lose to West Ham at Wembley and have spiralled down in uncontrollable fashion ever since.

Birmingham narrowly avoided a repeat of that as Lee Clark took Birmingham to the precipice of League One in 2013/14, but managed a miraculous final day survival courtesy of a late Paul Caddis strike.

The following year he was sacked and in came Gary Rowett, who has steadied the ship and stabilised the club.

Consecutive tenth place finishes – just shy of a play-off spot on both occasions – have got Blues fans more optimistic about what the future holds after a couple of rocky years with third tier football looking like an eventual inevitability.
