The Bluenoses are riding pretty well in the Championship this season as they currently occupy the final position of the play offs.

They are the only side in the division to have only lost one game against their Midlands neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The club look much more of a unit under manager, Gary Rowett and they will be aiming to be serious contenders to make a long awaited return to the Premier League.

They are slowly re-building to where they once before – famously beating Arsenal in the Carling Cup in 2011 and competing in the Europa League against the likes of Club Brugge and Braga.

Although this seems a long way off, with sides getting stronger every single year, they can look back at some of the great players that former boss Alex McLeish brought in at an affordable price that achieved one of the greatest honours in their history.

Football League World Writers, Ashley Williams identifies Birmingham City’s THREE best bargains over the past 10 years…

Cameron Jerome

The striker signed for Birmingham City for an initial £3 million from Cardiff City and only really got going during the Bluenoses spell in the Premier League.

However, the 30-year-old altogether netted 37 goals in 181 games, and although he was never a prolific striker, he was always a threatening presence up front with his pace and urgency.

Seb Larsson

Larsson made an immediate impact when he joined the Midlands outfit on a season-long deal from Arsenal.

His impressive performances saw him sign a permanent contract worth around £1 million and he was major part of the Bluenoses run to the Carling Cup final in 2011.

He also scored Birmingham’s goal of the season against Sheffield Wednesday in 2007 – running half the length of the pitch and neatly finishing inside the penalty box.

Larsson will always be regarded as an iconic figure at St Andrews.

Liam Ridgewell

Moving from Birmingham’s arch rivals Aston Villa for a fee of £2 million caused a stir among the Bluenose supporters, after becoming the first player to move between the clubs since Des Bremner in 1984 and he was also given the captain’s armband.

However, there were no commitment issues and he wowed the supporters with his performances.

He played the full 90 minutes in Birmingham’s win over Arsenal in the Carling Cup final.

Ridgewell was certainly a risky bit of business, but one that paid off.
