Sheffield Wednesday have had an up and down start to the season.

Plenty of excitement and anticipation was brewing around Hillsborough ahead of this campaign because of how successful Carlos Carvalhal's debut season in England nearly proved to be.

A solitary Mo Diame goal in the play-off final at Wembley won Hull promotion to the Premier League instead of Sheffield Wednesday and the Owls were undoubtedly targeting this season as the year they finally returned to the top flight after a 16 year hiatus in the Football League.

Wednesday now have the foundation to launch a serious promotion challenge but they will need to add consistency to their results.

They currently sit just outside the play-offs but should really be higher because they have slipped to a few sloppy results.

Sheffield Wednesday have a good squad and this January, Carvalhal could sanction some loan moves for his peripheral players.

Here are two that should ask for a temporary exit from Hillsborough.

Cameron Dawson

Keiren Westwood is the undisputed number one at Sheffield Wednesday and the Republic of Ireland international would probably get into most sides in this division.

Cameron Dawson has twice had to replace him as a substitute this season and has started a further two games in Westwood's absence.

The 21-year-old is highly rated at the club but started the season on loan at Wycombe because Sheffield Wednesday also have Jake Kean and Joe Wildsmith.

With Wildsmith returning from an injury soon and likely to return to second choice, Dawson should be allowed to go back out on loan to gain experience to help his future first team ambitions.

Lucas Joao

Lucas Joao clearly has some talent and flair but he finds himself fighting for a place in a very congested striker department with top quality forwards Fernando Forestieri, Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper above him in the pecking order.

The 23-year-old is a quick and physical centre forward who has hit 9 goals in total for Wednesday and needs to be playing more regular football to improve his game.

If the twice-capped Portugal forward can prove himself at another lower Championship club, then he would give Carvalhal something to think about next season.
