Following a very impressive sixth place finish last season, Sheffield Wednesday strengthened their squad in the summer leaving some players fighting for their place in the starting XI.

Some decided to vacate Hillsborough following the summer arrivals including Marnick Vermijl who left for Preston and Caolan Lavery who moved to close rivals Sheffield United.

Whereas many made the decision to stay in an attempt to push themselves into convincing the man in charge that they are worthy of a regular place in the starting line-up.

However, for a few players it hasn't gone the way that they would have hoped with the majority of their time being sat watching from the sidelines.

As we approach the January window, these players could do with having a chat with Carlos Carvalhal to see if they can get themselves more involved, or else a move could be on the cards.

In this article, FLW writer Tom Rawcliffe will identify 2 Sheffield Wednesday players who should be putting in extra work to prove themselves to Carlos Carvalhal...

Will Buckley

Right midfielder Will Buckley is one of the many players in English football who had great things expected of him but the 27-year-old's career has severely stuttered in the last couple of seasons.

After loan spells at Leeds and Birmingham last season, where he didn't see all that much game time, Sheffield Wednesday made their move.

Since joining the Owls on loan in the summer from Premier League side Sunderland, Buckley has played just 139 minutes of Championship football.

The lack of game time will no doubt be frustrating the former Brighton winger and he will certainly be wanting to see much more action as the season progresses.

Atdhe Nuhiu

Since moving to Yorkshire in 2013, forward Atdhe Nuhiu has played a big part in Wednesday's progress in recent years.

However, his individual involvement this year hasn't quite hit the heights that he will have wanted with manager Carlos Carvalhal excluding him from the starting XI in all Championship games.

Despite scoring no goals so far this season, the 6ft-6 striker is a real outlet up top and certainly offers an alternative style to the ordinary.

The Austrian striker may look to leave the club in January if Carvalhal can't promise him any more game time in order to further his career.
