It's fair to say Newcastle United have done little to surprise anyone this season so far.

It was expected that they would be top of the pile in the Championship at this stage of the campaign when they were relegated from the top-flight in May.

Spanish manager Rafa Benitez's summer recruitment went well with a number of arrivals in all sorts of positions, which would strengthen his side's push for an instant return to the Premier League.

The Magpies sit first with just one point separating them with second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion, having lost to Nottingham Forest.

One man who has been Newcastle's stand-out performer this season is Jonjo Shelvey.

Surprisingly not a signing made by Benitez, the midfielder was brought into St James' Park in January in their aim to stay in the first division but ultimately failed to do so.

Shelvey probably is one of the highest earners in that Newcastle United squad, but it's clear why.

He is undoubtedly one of their best players and here's TWO reasons as to why he is too good for his current employer....

Consistency

Whilst Newcastle have been fairly consistent this season, it is strange to always have eleven players on the pitch who consistently perform.

Jonjo Shelvey is one of those who is very consistent and it's rare to have a bad day for him.

Admittedly, the 24-year-old may be finding it a tad easier than last season having dropped a division but it still takes consistency to perform and that is something Shelvey offers.

He is able to find a pass and never puts a foot wrong.

My only worry though is he may be that good that a Premier League side come crawling for Jonjo Shelvey in January, with the quality he possesses.

In my opinion this makes him too good for Newcastle United, but the supporters I am sure would be sad to see him go if he did move along.

Passing range

It is very easy to see Shelvey's passing ability.

He has shown it for Swansea City, and is now doing it for Newcastle United.

From statistics and analysis, we can see Benitez has been playing the midfielder in a deep role, almost just in front of the defence line.

Shelvey also has made five assists in the Championship this season and that is something which proves his range of passing.

Jonjo Shelvey is always looking to play one over the top and gain an assist, that is what makes him a gear above everyone else at the Magpies.

Carries on his rate of assists and impresses with his passing display, Shelvey will be on his way in January or next summer for sure.
