Reading have endured a somewhat difficult start to the season following a poor run of results, but with the playoff pack remaining in reach, manager Jaap Stam will know things could be a lot worse.

The Championship table is tight, and a couple of wins could put the Royals firmly back in the mix, but consistency will be key if Reading are to be considered anything other than a mid-table side.

The hangover from the playoff final defeat last season has set the club back, but with the January transfer window just around the corner, Stam will know that he has the perfect opportunity to strengthen his squad.

The Royals spent big in the summer, bringing in the likes of Dave Edwards and Sone Aluko for big money, so funds may be tight at the Madejski in the new year.

All's not lost for Stam however, and with his U-23 side performing well in the Premier League 2, the Dutchman may consider these two rising stars for first-team affairs in the next few weeks…

Josh Barrett

Reading have not struggled for goals this season, but with midfielder Liam Kelly their top scorer with four goals, and central defender Liam Moore tied second with three, there is obviously a problem.

Yann Kermorgant is retiring at the end of the season and his age is beginning to show following an excellent campaign last season, and it is clear the Royals are in need of attacking reinforcements.

However, why should Stam spend big when young Josh Barrett is banging them in for fun in the reserves?

The 19-year-old has eight goals in only eleven appearances, and could be the answer to Stam’s striking woes.

If Barrett can convert his form to the first-team, he could become a star at the club.

Danny Loader

This 17-year-old is showing all the signs of becoming a star.

With four goals for the U-23’s already to his name this season, Loader is playing well beyond his years, and could be considered for a shock first-team call-up in the near future.

Already an England U-17 international, Loader does not turn 17 until the end of August, so will remain on a youth contract until that date.

He remains available for selection for Stam’s side, but some may argue this step-up may be a little too soon for the developing striker.

If he continues to score goals however and Reading’s struggles upfront continue, then there is no reason why the youngster shouldn’t be given an opportunity to shine in front of The Madejski crowd.

Reading fans, do you feel that Loader is too young to be given a chance in the first-team? Or should he play if he is good enough? Have your say below...
