As we approach the halfway mark of the season, Jaap Stam will be pleased with his side's progression as they sit comfortably in the play-off places in 4th place.

The Royals have picked up 28 points in 16 games and are in a great run of form – winning their last consecutive league games and losing just twice in their last ten.

Certain players have stepped up their game to make sure Stam’s side are in the position that they are, and the supporters will be a much more happy bunch after a miserable couple of years.

However, when players put in exceptional displays, then there is the risk that Premier League sides may come knocking as the January transfer window looms.

Jaap Stam's sole aim will be to get Reading back to the top flight, but with games coming thick and fast and this season being regarded as the strongest Championship league by far, it will not be an easy route.

Reading have been known to let their best players leave the side, and there could be fears that the same may happen again.

Football League World Writer, Ashley Williams identifies TWO Reading players who need to leave to fulfil their potential…

Garath McCleary

The Reading winger has been the Royals’ best player so far this season, and has been one of the main reasons why the club are progressing so well this term.

He has netted six goals so far for the Berkshire club and has always been regarded as an established Championship player.

With McCleary showing supporters how good of a player he can be, some Premier League clubs may pick up on this.

With so many talented clubs in the league this season, I think it would be a real shock if the Royals would go up.

If McCleary wants to continue his progression, he needs to leave for the top flight.

Joey Van Den Berg

The no-nonsense midfielder has also been one of Reading’s better performers this season and his ‘pitbull’ style of play has been a driving force for their midfield.

He has proved that he is physically and technically strong in the Championship, and could be a great asset for any lower league Premier League side.

At the age of 30-years-old, he is entering the closing stages of his playing career and if a reputable side came in for him, he should take it with both hands.
