Preston have had a solid start to the season and they are currently 11th, just three points away from the play-offs and an unlikely promotion is something that definitely isn’t out of the question for North End.

Simon Grayson has done a sterling job at Deepdale, firstly getting them into the Championship and then not just keeping them there, but making them dark horse promotion candidates.

Grayson will have genuine belief that Preston can achieve the play-offs this season and he will be looking to rediscover their form from late last season, which saw them hit a purple patch.

The Lilywhites proved their promotion credentials in October, going unbeaten after a tricky week in which they played 3 of the Championship top four.

Grayson will be looking to add to his squad in January, to give North End a final push towards the play-offs.

However, to sign players at Preston, they have to sell some as well, so Grayson will be looking to get rid of some at the fringe of his squad to free up funds.

Here, I will look at two fringe players Grayson should sell.

Eoin Doyle

Doyle spent time on loan at Deepdale last season, before making the move permanent in summer but he is one of many options up front for Simon Grayson.

Preston have a wealth of striking options, with Makienok, Hugill and Beckford all playing well, and with Stevie May set to come back into the mix soon, Doyle could find his games time very limited.

Doyle is a very similar player to Makienok and Hugill, and with both doing so well, he could be sold on in January, despite not being at the club too long.

Chris Humphrey

Chris Humphrey

Humphrey was a key player in Preston’s success in League One, but since they have returned to the Championship, Humphrey has struggled, partly due to injury.

Despite Humphrey having been out for injured for a long time, he will have a tough time forcing his way back into Preston defence that is very solid.

Humphrey can play at right back or right midfield, but he will struggle to get back in the team in either position, so Grayson could look to offload him and reinvest the money in someone else.
