Having been marooned in the depths of the second tier of English football for 6 years, Sheffield United have finally broken free from its constraints, and will be playing their football in the Sky Bet Championship next season.

The Blades enjoyed a solitary campaign in the Premier League way back in the 2006-07 season, and Chris Wilder’s side can now dream of a return to the top flight.

The team from Yorkshire has dominated the division this season, and were crowned Champions on Saturday when title rivals Bolton Wanderers fell to defeat at relegation threatened Oldham Athletic.

Title rivals may be a flattering term for the Lancashire club, as Sheffield United lie 14 points ahead of the Trotters, and have walked the league this season.

With promotion secured, Chris Wilder will be undoubtedly be turning his attentions towards next season, and planning his side’s first campaign back in the Championship.

The gap between the two divisions is a big one, and Wilder will have to strengthen his team over the summer in order to cement the Blades’ position in the higher division.

Here we take a look at two players who should be on United’s manager’s radar this summer.

John Marquis

Sheffield United will come into the league with a smaller budget than many of the clubs in the division, and should look further down the football pyramid to identify possible signings.

One man who the Blades should definitely consider is a player already plying his trade in Yorkshire, Doncaster’s John Marquis.

The London born forward had spent his entire career with Millwall, but often found himself away from The Den, spending ten loan spells with seven different clubs during his seven years on the books of the East End club.

Marquis joined Doncaster on a free transfer this summer, and has truly found a home with Rovers. The striker’s 26 goals in 42 appearances has propelled Donny to the brink of the League Two title, having already secured promotion back to League One at the first time of asking.

Marquis’ exploits see him lead the goal scoring charts in the division, and the forward averages a goal every 145 minutes of play, which represents a very impressive return.

Sheffield United will need to continue their scoring touch in the Championship, and a goal scorer of Marquis’ talent would be a welcome addition to the squad. Some may question whether the striker would succeed at the level, given his inability to break into the Millwall side, but the forward has proven he can be hit the back of the net on a consistent basis in the right system.

Marquis would add another option to Wilder up front, and with one year remaining on his Doncaster contract, United will feel that Marquis may be acquired at a reasonable price for a man of his ability.

George Saville

After working his way through the famed Chelsea youth system, midfielder George Saville spent a very successful season on loan at fellow west London side, Brentford, in which the Surrey born player helped the Bees to automatic promotion.

Saville opted to join Wolves once his contract with Chelsea expired in the summer of 2014, and the youngster has been a regular fixtures in the West Midlands’ side.

Saville signed a three year contract with Wolves with an option for a fourth year. Three years will have passed this summer, and a fourth year has not yet been agreed by the two parties. This is where Sheffield United must strike.

Saville would make an excellent addition to the United midfield, and would provide the side with the Championship experience that the much of the current squad currently lacks.

On a free, Saville would certainly be within the Blades’ price range, and the wage commanded by the player would also be within budget.

The Championship is a difficult division in which to compete, and Saville’s ability in the middle of the park would be certain to provide an added air of quality and creativity into the team.

Wolves may yet decide to activate the fourth year clause in the player’s contract, but Sheffield United should definitely be monitoring the situation at Molineux.
