In what been an exciting and extremely competitive League Two season, Paul Cook's Portsmouth side remain in the heart of the play-off picture with an outside chance of breaking into the automatic promotion places.

As this is Portsmouth's fourth consecutive season in League Two, finally, it appears that the South Coast giants could be on course for a return to League One as they look to climb back up the English football pyramid.

Under Paul Cook's management, Portsmouth has been one of the standout sides in League Two with their sights set on Carlisle United who sit in the third automatic promotion place.

Although Portsmouth's form has faltered slightly in recent weeks, Paul Cook's side are still in an extremely healthy position,

Portsmouth's crucial fixtures in the coming weeks could go a long way in determining if Portsmouth gains promotion this season or not.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at TWO Portsmouth matches which will seriously make or break their season....

Stevenage v Portsmouth

As Portsmouth look to earn promotion back to League One, a crucial game in Portsmouth's season could be the away fixture at Stevenage in the middle of March.

As it stands, Portsmouth sits in 5th place and Stevenage sits in 6th place with both sides having a big opportunity to overtake Carlisle United and gain automatic promotion.

It will be an extremely difficult for Portsmouth as Darren Sarll's side has been the most in-form side over the past ten games, whereas Portsmouth's form has been wholly inconsistent.

If Portsmouth can win, it could give Paul Cook's side the confidence and momentum to push on for the remainder of the season, however, a defeat could see Stevenage overtake them.

The game at Broadhall Way could potentially make or break Portsmouth's season as it could be the game that determines if Portsmouth are capable of earning automatic promotion or not.

Portsmouth v Plymouth

The other key game that Portsmouth has before the end of the season is the only remaining fixture they face against a top seven side other than Stevenage, Plymouth Argyle at Fratton Park.

Although Plymouth Argyle's form has faltered dramatically with just five points from the past five games, Plymouth is still a heavy favourite for automatic promotion as they sit second in the table with an eight-point gap from the chasing pack.

Portsmouth face Plymouth Argyle in mid-April where it is not only going to be a crunch tie but it is also going to be in a high-pressure environment which the run-in is especially considering the fact that the play-offs and automatic promotion race is still widely open.

As Portsmouth have the fifth best home record in League 2 and Plymouth Argyle have the fourth best away record in League 2, it could be an extremely tight high-quality affair.

This game could make or break Portsmouth's season as Paul Cook's side will be under intense pressure to get a result if they want to take the final automatic promotion place.
