Derby County will be hoping that the return of Steve McClaren will turn the Rams' fortunes around, after a dismal start to the season under former boss Nigel Pearson.

The Rams currently sit 17th but have hit a purple patch under their new boss and Derby fans will want to see some more of the football that McClaren played in 2013/14, arguably Derby’s most successful season in years.

Derby look transformed under McClaren, playing some great attacking football, a far cry from the counter attacking style Nigel Pearson implemented.

Derby’s league position doesn’t reflect on the strength of their squad.

They have some great players at their disposal but previous managers have all failed to get them playing as a team.

McClaren will be looking to recruit in January to reinforce the squad and bring his own players in, and put his own stamp on the squad.

Here, FLW's Chris Wilson will look at TWO players who Derby should sign in January to take them to the next level…

Bakary Sako

Sako was doing well for Palace last season, but he has been plagued with injury since, so he has found game time very hard to come by.

It would make sense for Pardew to let Sako go out on loan for the remainder of the season to build his fitness up ahead of a return to Selhurst Park.

Sako would definitely suit McClaren’s style of play, his pace and guile out wide, is exactly what the former England boss likes in a winger.

Sako would provide Derby with that extra bit of creativity in attack and would provide their big money signing, Matej Vydra with plenty opportunities to score.

Maya Yoshida

Maya Yoshida

Yoshida has fell out of favour at Southampton over the last year and this could lead to him seeking a move away from St Mary's.

The Japanese centre back would add some defensive solidity to a Derby defence that so often gets found wanting.

Yoshida would offer a lot to Derby, his defensive abilities are much needed and he also offers a threat from set pieces.

If McClaren can sort out Derby’s defensive woes and continue their good work in attack, then Derby could be in for a successful season.
