Newcastle United are back on top of the pile in the Championship, and look well set to return to the Premier League under manager Rafa Benitez.

The club have invested massively this season, with summer spending in the summer over £50m, although they recouped much of that through player sales.

However, in January the squad was not improved, leading to some questions from manager Benitez over why he wasn't able to strengthen his ranks.

One thing Benitez might look to do now though is look into the free agency, where he could look to sign some players who are without a club but still have something to offer in England's second tier.

With that in mind, we at FLW have taken a look at TWO free agents who Newcastle could look to sign now the transfer window is over...

Martin Caceres

The experience defender is a class act when all is said and done, and it is surprising he does not have a club.

The Uruguayan has played at the top level and could definitely offer something to the Magpies if he made the move to the North East.

Caceres would be an excellent signing on a free transfer, and is someone Benitez could well have his eye on.

Robbie Keane

If Benitez wants to add some top quality experience to his squad, then Robbie Keane could be his man.

The Irish striker has loads of ability to go with that experience, and despite being well into his 30's, he will definitely still have something to offer at Championship level.

Keane would be open to moving to a club the size of Newcastle, and he would be an excellent acquisition for many teams in the Championship.
