Sheffield Wednesday’s season so far has been an absolute disaster, with the Owls struggling to keep up with the pace set by the promotion chasing pack.

Boss Carlos Carvalhal has it all to do if he is to lead his side to their third consecutive season of playoff football, with failure to do so surely resulting in the Portuguese’s job at the club.

The Owls have struggled to see games out this season, with a magnitude of draws to blame for their current predicament.

A spell of four in a row has seen the club drop unnecessary points, with failure to dispatch sides including Hull City and Barnsley at Hillsborough hardly the form of a promotion contender.

Carvalhal’s side look to lack experience at times, and this is something that certainly needs addressing when the January transfer window opens for business.

With that in mind, deals for these two players should be a top priority in the new year…

Martin Cranie

Wednesday concede a lot of silly goals, and have struggled to find a leader at the heart of their defence during their difficult run of form.

31-year-old Cranie could be available in the new year having failed to tie down a regular role in Huddersfield’s Premier League side, despite playing a significant role in their promotion to the division last season.

Just three top-flight appearances to his name this season and with his contract set to expire in the summer, it is obvious that the player is surplus to requirements at The John Smith’s Stadium, and Wednesday should look to tie up a deal.

Cranie will be available on the cheap, and an 18-month contract could work for both parties.

David Meyler

The 28-year-old has stood out at Hull City this season despite the Tigers abysmal form in the league, and could be available in January with his contract set to expire in the summer.

The Irishman has been a stalwart for club and country in recent years, and is at the perfect age to continue his fine form with a new club.

Meyler would be a wonderful addition to an Owls midfield that has lacked bite and impetus at times this season, and Carvalhal should do what it takes to bring the player to Hillsborough in January.

Get him playing well alongside Barry Bannan in the middle of the park, and the club will begin to climb the table in the second half of the season.
