Aston Villa are not having the season that their fans may have hoped for.

Steve Bruce’s side are struggling in the league- they currently sit 16h in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Villa have strengthened their squad significantly during the January transfer window, bringing in seven new faces.

Among those were Henri Lansbury and Conor Hourihane, who captained Nottingham Forest and Barnsley respectively.

Bruce also bolstered his attacking options with the signing of Brentford’s Scott Hogan, who has scored 14 league goals this season.

The Villa boss will be hoping his new additions will help to cut the 10-point gap to the play-offs.

With many of Bruce’s men letting down the side this season, we look at TWO players in Villa’s multi-million pound squad that are out of their depth...

Alan Hutton

Hutton is an experienced player in the English game, having previously played for Tottenham Hotspur in both the Premier League and Champions League.

The right-back has also represented Scotland at international level, but has disappointed for Villa this season.

Hutton has made 21 appearances across all competitions, and has been one of Villa’s most disappointing players.

Bruce bought James Bree, a 19-year old right-back from Barnsley, during the January window, to add competition to Villa’s right side.

The former Scottish international started the 3-0 defeat to Brentford ahead on Bree, but the former Barnsley teenager is expected to be Hutton’s long-term replacement.

Gabby Agbonlahor

Agbonlahor is Villa’s longest serving player, representing the club for over ten years.

The striker played under Martin O’Neill, when the club were competing for a European place in the Premier League.

However, this season Agbonlahor has been poor for Villa, failing to score in any of his 12 appearances.

Jonathan Kodjia has been preferred to Agbonlahor for large parts of the season.

New signing Hogan will also be expected to feature ahead of Agbonlahor, as it seems Bruce has lost faith in the 30-year old.
