Frank Lampard, like many new managers, will be looking to make his mark on the team after taking over at Pride Park.
With the club seemingly willing to sell star striker Matej Vydra for the right price, the Rams will be looking for somebody to fill his boots.
The Czech scored 22 league goals last season on his way to the Championship golden boot and those sorts of goals will definitely need replacing.
One person they could look to as a replacement is Ipswich Town talisman Martyn Waghorn.
The forward only moved to Portman Road from Rangers last season, but his dazzling campaign has led to him being linked with a lot of clubs – including Derby.
Nobody had a hand in more Championship goals last season than the 28-year-old who scored 16 goals himself and assisted a further 13.
He is no doubt the calibre of player that Lampard will be wanting to bring into Derby County, but would he be a good signing?
It’s hard to ignore what Waghorn did at Ipswich last season.
He was absolutely superb in attack, bringing goals and assists.
He’d be a great addition for Lampard.
Waghorn is a proven Championship scorer and was superb for Ipswich last season.
He’d no doubt score goals for the Rams but, that said, with all their strikers do they need another forward? Perhaps change is on the way.
A decent signing.
You can’t argue with his productivity last season, he weighed in with plenty of goals and assists but he is 29 this season and I think Derby need to freshen it up with younger, exciting forwards.
If Derby can pull this off, it would be fantastic business.
Waghorn’s tally of goals and assists last year ranked him as one of the most lethal threats in the division.
Comfortable on either wing, as a number 10 or as a central striker, Waghorn is the ideal signing for Lampard’s men.
Not for me, there’s better out there. Waghorn is a decent striker, but do Derby want decent, or do they want Vydra style prowess and threat?
If it’s the latter, Martyn Waghorn isn’t the right man.
