Derby County are making moves to find a replacement for manager Frank Lampard, amid increasing talk that the 40-year-old will move to Chelsea in the next few days, with talks scheduled to continue with former Barcelona start Phillip Cocu.

Cocu enjoyed a fine playing career, the highlight being the six years he spent at Barcelona from 1998 till 2004, where he clocked up 31 goals in 205 appearances as a midfielder.

Since going into management in 2008, the 48-year-old has enjoyed spells with the Netherlands national side as assistant manager, while also having spells at PSV initially as caretaker manager and then as permanent, and most recently at Fenerbahce in Turkey.

So, would Cocu be the right choice for the Rams?

We discuss........

Tommy Joyce

"Cocu is an exciting prospect for Derby fans: he was a great player, he's young, and he probably has good contacts. However, they shouldn't be distracted by his recent spell at Fenerbahce.

"He was extremely successful at PSV, winning the title three times - but he already a legend there and was used to the way the club worked.

"His spell in Turkey was nothing short of catastrophic. Fenerbahce, who have one of the strongest wage budgets in the league, and are expected to be competing for the title, were fighting relegation during his whole spell.

"De Boer's experience was very similar when he joined Crystal Palace; successful at his home club, had a shocker with a big foreign move, and then tried to come to England and tried to change too much.

"I personally think Darren Moore would be a much wiser option. Just because he understands the Championship and has been in it recently. That's not to say Cocu can't adjust - it just can go very wrong, very quickly.

"It's easy to be disguised by the clout that his name holds."

Louie Chandler

"This is potentially a very exciting appointment.

"The Dutchman has never managed in England before so there are no guarantees but the former Barcelona midfielder has all the makings to be very popular in Derby.

"By all accounts, he is a big advocate of playing attractive, attacking football which is no surprise given the time he spent with Barcelona and brings with him plenty of top-level management experience.

"That was the big question mark over Frank Lampard throughout his time so finding someone with experience who can play attractive football would be a big coup for the Rams."

Alfie Burns

“Where Derby go from here is going to be interesting and Lampard is leaving a big void that needs to be filled.

“Whilst some will say ‘he was only around 12 months’ Lampard’s impact on the Rams was massive and losing him is a blow for the club at this stage of the summer.

“If Cocu comes in, he’s going to have to adapt quickly to the Championship and that in itself is a challenge, without even throwing in replacing Lampard.

“His record abroad is strong, but this is a tough division to crack and there’s an element of risk involved.”

Gary Hutchinson

“He’ll be better than Frank Lampard. I’ll say it one last time; how he’s got the Chelsea job I’ll never know.

“Cocu would be a huge appointment. When you look at his CV so far he should be aiming higher, surely? Three Eredivisie title with PSV speak for themselves, that’s not an easy league to win. He won their FA Cup equivalent too, which is equally as impressive.

“As a player he was a World Cup runner up and earned over 100 caps for the Netherlands. He’s got the right experience on and off the field.

“He’d be an amazing appointment.”
