Paul Clement has confirmed that there will not be a major overhaul at Reading this summer despite their struggles in the Sky Bet Championship.

Just 12 months ago, Reading were on their way to the play-off final under Jaap Stam, following a hugely successful 2016/17 campaign.

After a play-off final defeat to Huddersfield Town, Reading remained a Championship outfit, but this year have found themselves fighting relegation.

Clement’s side could still drop into the third-tier following Sunday’s final game of the season.

Despite such a dramatic fall in the last year, Clement confirmed there wouldn’t be an overhaul when the summer transfer window comes around. He told Get Reading: “There will be some movement but it won't be a massive overhaul.

"The club has worked hard to construct a squad that will be competitive at this level in the past two years and last year it was. Things haven't gone well this season but that's not a reason to get everybody out and have a massive change again.”

Although an overhaul isn’t on Clement’s agenda, the Reading boss did confirm that he would be looking to balance the squad he inherited from Stam, which he claims isn’t balanced.

He continued: “Right back is an example where we have one senior player in Chris Gunter and someone else in Tennai Watson who has been out for a while and hasn't been around to push him.

"But in another area we have five strikers and sometimes we only play with one, so we are probably too heavy in that position. These are things we can address in the summer."

Before full attention at the Madejski Stadium turns to the summer, Reading have to secure their Championship status on Sunday afternoon.

Clement’s side travel to Cardiff City for their final game of the season sitting just two points above the relegation zone, knowing defeat, combined with results elsewhere, could see them relegated.

The Verdict

Of course, Reading would be foolish to turn their full attention to the summer whilst relegation is still a possibility, however, it looks like Clement’s side will survive, with others at more risk than the Royals.

The summer will be interesting for Reading, as the squad at the Madejski does still have a lot of quality, but has seriously underperformed this season.

A major overhaul might not be on the cards, but Reading need to freshen things up with four or five quality additions ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
