Dean Smith capped his first match in charge at Villa Park with a 1-0 win over Swansea, on a highly charged day when the Villa Park faithful paid an emotional tribute to club president Sir Doug Ellis, who passed last week.

A Tammy Abraham goal was enough to take all three points and lift Villa up to 13th place in the Championship just seven points off leaders Middlesbrough.

But what is the verdict on Dean Smith's first game in charge at Villa?

We discuss.....

Jay Taylor

Positive, but there is more to work on.

Dean Smith would not have been able to implement everything he would like in just two weeks and therefore Aston Villa are still a work in progress.

They have listened to the basics and done those well so far under Smith but it will be interesting to see how they develop our the next five or six weeks.

A solid rather than spectacular display, but I am sure those performances will come with time.

It was about stopping the rot and getting the fans back on side with positive results.

Jacob Potter

He couldn’t have asked for a better start to life at his boyhood club.

The win over Swansea was Villa’s first win in four league games and Smith will hope that this crucial win can be the turning point in their season.

I certainly believe that this win will see the confidence levels amongst the players increase at Villa, which is what they have been missing in recent weeks.

I think it is likely that we are going to see Dean Smith’s side pushing for a top six spot towards the end of the season.

Gary Hutchinson

It was a win; therefore, it is job done.

In terms of performance, set up and all of that, it’ll develop and grow organically.

What he needed to do was stop the rot and he did that.

George Harbey

I thought he did exactly what he needed to do - win the game.

They had numerous chances to extend their lead, with Tammy Abraham missing some really easy chances, but I think that just shows how Villa can create chances easily and it will bode well for the future.
