Sheffield Wednesday are interested in free agent Efe Ambrose as they look to strengthen their defence in this window.

The 30-year-old triggered a clause in his contract with Hibs at the start of the month that allowed him to leave the Edinburgh outfit on a free transfer.

And, according to TEAMtalk, the Owls are keen on the player who wants to play in English football.

However, the report does state that he has offers from several clubs abroad, whilst Premier League Cardiff are thought to be interested.

Nevertheless, they also add that Wednesday are confident a deal can be done for the former Celtic man.

So, would he be a good signing for the Championship club?

Our writers take a look...

George Harbey

"I’m not so sure about this one.

"Ambrose hasn’t always convinced, and there are better options out there.

"He did well at times but does make a lot of mistakes and that's a concern."

Alfie Burns

"It’s certainly an area of the team that Bruce and co need to strengthen this month.

"Wednesday’s defensive effort this year has been poor and moving forwards it needs to be tightened up.

"Ambrose is an experienced head that will aid doing that, but whether he’s their best bet for the future is certainly up for debate."

Chris Gallagher

"This would be a good signing.

"The Owls are poor defensively, even though things have picked up in the last few weeks generally.

"They need more experience and whilst Ambrose is prone to the odd mistake, his time at Hibs suggests he'd be a definite upgrade on what they have now."
