Oldham Athletic full back George Edmundson has emerged as a target for Championship side Preton North End, it has been reported.
Edmundson, who is enjoying his first season of regular football in England, has been in outstanding form for Oldham following their relegation from League One at the end of last season.
The 21-year-old has played every single minute of The Latics’ League Two campaign, finding the net on two occasions to earn himself a place in the EFL’s League Two Team of the Year.
Those performances have certainly drawn some admirers from further up the divisions, with Football Insider claiming that Stoke; Sunderland and Preston are all taking an interest in the left back.
So would Edmundson be a good signing for Alex Neil’s North End side? We asked some of our Football League World writers for their opinions.
“This would be a great signing.
“Preston have made some shrewd signings from the lower leagues over the past few windows and Edmunson fits the bill.
“That should also make North End an attractive option to the player and he will see them as the ideal club to continue his development.”
“Given Preston’s problems with injuries and suspensions this season, a player with Edmundson’s consistency will surely be an attractive proposition to Alex Neil.
“It would be a big step for the 21-year-old, but given how quickly he has adapted to regular football, you feel it is one he would be capable of making.”
“Edmundson is a bright, young talent who looks set for a successful career in the EFL.
“Alex Neil has done a great job at Preston this season, and his recent contract extension means Edmundson would be a good signing with the future in mind.
“But Edmundson may need time to adapt to the Championship’s demands, so it is important that pressure is not put on him immediately.”

“He’s certainly their type of player.
“Preston have a knack of signing plenty of talented players from the leagues below, and Edmundson is a very good player indeed.
“Their defence is an area that arguably needs strengthening the most, and he is a perfect option for both the short term and the long term.”
