Garry Monk's Middlesbrough are sitting in 11th spot in the Sky Bet Championship table after an inconsistent start to the season.

Many expected Boro to be right up amongst the top six, however it just hasn't seemed to click yet for the former Premier League club.

Monk made a number of high-profile signings in the summer transfer window, and one of them was striker Ashley Fletcher, who Boro bought from West Ham for a £6.5m fee.

Fletcher has struggled to hold down a regular spot in Monk's starting elevens this season, and you have to wonder if he's a a spare part in the Boro squad at present.

The writers here at Football League World have issued their verdicts on the 22-year-old forward....

Alfie Burns

The young striker is yet to justify the mammoth fee Boro paid for him over the summer, finding himself lost on occasions in the Championship.

Fletcher has plenty of potential and may be seen as a long-term investment by Steve Gibson and Middlesbrough.

Like many of Boro’s summer arrivals, Fletcher is yet to make the impact expected of him, but with a hugely talented squad surrounding him, he could yet come good.

Chris Gallagher

Fletcher looked a very pricey signing that wasn't necessarily needed at the time given Boro's options and that's how it's played out.

Whilst he undoubtedly has potential, it looks as though it was the wrong move for all concerned given his lack of starts.

That's unlikely to change in the future so even at this early stage he might be considering his next move.

George Dagless

I feel sorry for him.

He can't help the fee Boro have spent on him, nor can he help that he's often been played out of position to accommodate the amount of strikers Garry Monk signed.

I think for the right club he'd be a real asset but he won't get ahead of the likes of Britt Assombalonga and many are still wondering just why the Boro manager signed him.

Should press for a loan away in January.

Adam Simeoni

The kid deserves a break.

At West Ham he never had a chance of breaking into the first team, and it was even worse for him at United.

Fletcher could have gone to a smaller Championship side and become the star man, but chose to battle for places at Boro who remain one of the favourites for promotion.

Fletcher is young and very talented, but the plethora of attacking talent available to Garry Monk makes giving game time to the player very difficult.

I think he just needs one break - a goal or an injury to a team mate - to get a good run in the team and really find his feet.

He has the potential to be a top striker.
