The Championship is a rather unforgiving league, and it can catch even the most professional player off guard.

Think back to a time where you've thought, "God, he's rubbish!" It could be when your left-back got skinned over and over by a tricky winger, it could be when the ball simply goes off target whenever your trusted striker shoots or more unfortunately it could be your new signing having a terrible debut.

While the Championship has a lot of top quality players, there are some who are getting caught out for not being able to handle this level of football.

Every team has poor players, signings that didn't quite work out or players who have simply turned horrible in the space of a summer and it is unfortunate to see.

Possibly the worst thing is to see someone who performed so well last season completely fail to live up to expectations this season.

Here at FootballLeagueWorld we've decided to cast those under-performers into the spotlight.

Here is our WORST Championship XI so far this season set up in a comfortable 4-4-2........

GK - Kelle Roos (Derby County/Rotherham United)

roos

The first name on the worst team-sheet in the Championship goes to Derby County 'keeper Kelle Roos, simply for his woeful performances out on loan at Rotherham United.

Ben Amos was a close contender for this spot considering his inability to deal with long ranged shots has cost Bolton in recent times, but Roos' performances for Rotherham were simply on such a lower level.

He made a meagre five appearances for Rotherham at the start of the season and while this surely does not seem enough to warrant opinion, he had such a terrible time at the Millers that he was sent back to Derby at the beginning of September from his season-long loan.

He conceded ten goals in 4 appearances in the league and he made a number of high-profile errors in each of these games as Rotherham plummeted towards the wrong end of the table.

It was very close between Roos and Amos but despite making only five appearances for Rotherham, Amos has most definitely never played as bad over a period of five games.

LB - Zakarya Bergdich (Charlton Athletic)

Zakarya Bergdich

Bergdich signed from Spanish side Real Valladolid in the summer and promised much.

The 27 year-old is in the prime of his career and with his experience in three different countries, Spain, Italy and France, should have meant that the versatile left-back could adapt to the Championship fairly well.

However this has not been the case. He has made fifteen appearances for Athletic and has been largely underwhelming as Charlton find themselves in a relegation battle.

His attacking nature has served him well in the past but in the Championship he has often left his defence exposed while only providing one assist in attack.

His last performance against Rotherham United saw him play very well with his attacking runs proving fruitful against the Millers, but in that game; every Charlton player had a good game.

CB - Anthony Kay (MK Dons)

kay7890

After a good start to the season, Anthony Kay has been more of a liability than an asset for MK Dons in recent weeks.

His game against Burnley demonstrated that despite having experience at the age of 33, he is struggling at this level, while he was instrumental in Milton Keyne's promotion last season, this season he has really suffered.

He was sent off in a miserable 5-0 defeat and looked like the most inexperienced player on the pitch despite being the oldest in his team.

The centre-half has made 26 appearances for Dons and has looked average at best. His general poor discipline can lead to some unsteady moments and his downfalls in tackling and aerial ability outweigh his positive of experience.

CB - Greg Halford (Rotherham United/Birmingham City)

halforddd9000

Probably Steve Evans' worst signing in the summer window, Greg Halford has been a disaster from the very beginning.

Halford, like Roos has only made a handful of appearances this season but he has done very little to help Rotherham in their bid to stay in the Championship.

Evans sought to bring in experienced defenders to make the Millers a robust, hard-working and proficient outfit that could handle the rigours of the Championship and keep Rotherham stable in the league.

Halford's experience counted for very little as hopeful Rotherham fans were sent away with shaking heads as they lost 4-1 to promoted MK Dons.

After admitting on Twitter that he was not happy at the club, he was sent out to Birmingham City where he made three appearances and performed just like he did at Rotherham; blunderingly.

RB - Scott Wootton (Leeds United)

wootton

In Wootton's defence, he is most definitely not a right-back. However there aren't many worse than him at the position and he takes his place in our worst XI.

As happens when you play a player out of position, they usually don't fare well. Steve Evans has defended Wootton and while he is a good player his performances at right-back have been suspect.

He does not have the pace and quick feet to keep up with wingers and in an attacking sense, well he offers very little. Wootton can do a job at right-back but his performances have worried the fans and the 24-year-old must feel very unstable in an unfamiliar position.

Leeds have suffered since the departure of Sam Byram and while there are players like 20-year-old Lewie Coyle in the youth academy performing well, Evans opts to continue with Wootton and he is unconvincing at best.

CM - Paul Green (Rotherham United)

paul green

Playing in the centre of midfield requires a number of attributes. Vision, passing ability, tackling, positioning, a good work rate and good technical ability.

Experienced midfielder Paul Green has a few of these things but it is his letdowns which bring him in to this XI.

The jury is still out from the Rotherham fans as to whether he is good enough for the team but generally many leave the New York Stadium frustrated after poor performance after poor performance from Green.

He misplaces many of his passes, which is odd for a 32 year-old former international. His 78% pass rate is okay but he often passes to the opposition at frustrating moments. He can break down an attack with a well timed tackle but he will then pass the ball straight to the opposition.

Green also struggles with putting the ball in the net and despite getting into promising positions, he rarely delivers from his shots which just leads to more frustration from the fans.

On his day he can determine the outcome of a game from midfield, but very often he contributes to a poor Rotherham performance with mistakes.

CM - Alex Mowatt (Leeds United)

mowattttt

Much has been expected of Mowatt this season but long range screamers aside, he has not brought much to the table.

The Leeds Academy product has not reached the same heights as his fellow youngster Sam Byram and has instead stagnated a little this season.

When he plays well he is a joy to watch, but more often than not he is disappointing, he is not great in the air and in a central midfield role he often loses concentration and loses his man.

The future is bright for Mowatt but this season he has been a big disappointment as Leeds look to finish mid-table again.

RM - Rob Hall

robhall99

MK Dons' Hall has been largely ineffective this season and despite getting plenty of playing time he only has two goals and no assists to show for it.

He delivers very little in terms of crosses and when he does they are largely unsuccessful.

He has the right stature and playing style for his position, but lacks the end product; arguably the most important part of being a winger.

The Dons are not having a great debut in the Championship but have held their own, however they need forwards who can produce and Hall has failed to do so this season.

LM - Chris Maguire (Rotherham United)

Chris_Maguire_sheffield_wednesday-363675

Joining from rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, Maguire has since fallen to League Two after his poor spell at Rotherham.

Used either on the left or right for the Millers he failed to produce when it mattered and didn't score a single goal at the club.

His one assist is all he has to show for and he was swiftly moved out in the January window.

ST - Kieran Agard (Bristol City)

agardddd90

Agard was poised to play in the Championship with Rotherham a season ago but decided to drop a league to play with Bristol City

Now, after playing a part in their promotion last season, he is really struggling to make an impact in the Championship.

His tenacity and direct play from two seasons ago in League One with Rotherham has deserted him, and now he finds it difficult to make any impact on a game with centre-halves marshalling the small forward easily.

He only has two goals in the league and has 16 appearances and it seems he will depart the club in the near future if his performances don't improve.

ST - Eoin Doyle (Preston)

doyle77

After performing so well for Chesterfield, Doyle moved to Cardiff and then to Preston where he has only scored twice this season.

So much was expected of the Irishman but he has failed to deliver.

He scored 32 in 69 for Chesterfield and had Premier League sides rearing their heads for him but having only scored 5 goals for Cardiff whom he eventually joined, he has declined sharply.

Luckily Doyle is young and has a lot of time to recapture his form but this season has been a huge disappointment for the young man.

That concludes our worst XI, for Rotherham fans it is not a great showing and for promising youngsters Mowatt and Doyle it is unfortunate but these players all have time to turn it around. Who would you pick in a worst XI? Do you agree with this one? Let us know in the comments below!
