Birmingham City under Gary Rowett are a formidable force in the Championship this season particularly in 2016, they have put themselves in contention with a magnificent run.

The Blues are now seventh in the table, only three points off a play-off spot and in with a fantastic chance of making a return to the Premier League.

The squad they have assembled play some fantastic football and on their day they can beat anyone in this division, but Birmingham have taken some time to get to this point and in that time they have made some questionable signings over recent years.

Which made us here at Football League World wonder what is the worst XI that Birmingham could put on the field from the past five years.

FLW's Anthony Yeo has come up with Birmingham City's worst XI from the past five years........

Adam Legzdins - Goalkeeper

Adam Legzdins

Finding a keeper for this XI proved the most difficult task, as Birmingham generally have had good Keepers, Jack Butland , Myhill, Doyle to name a few, so unfortunately for Adam Legzdins he is not as good as the afore mentioned keepers.

So I have no choice in putting the 29-year-old keeper into the side but it is not because he is a bad keeper, just not quite as good as some of his predecessors in-between the sticks for Birmingham City.

Pablo Ibanez-  Right Back

When the defender signed for Birmingham, his career was on a downward spiral and his performances in a Blue shirt were mediocre at best.

The Spaniard joined in August 2011 and two years later he left Birmingham having made just 13 starts for the Blues.

He never got accepted by the Birmingham fans and was more like a passenger than a player. who contributed on the field of play.

Aaron Martin - Centre Back

Aaron martin9

This is a case of Martin not being a bad player yet for whatever reason he never performed well at his time at Birmingham City.

Martin arrived at St Andrews in January 2014 and made just six starts for the Blues and came off the bench twice, he endeavoured but never really impressed the Birmingham fans.

It came as no surprise he was subsequently moved on in the summer transfer window on a free to Yeovil Town.

Both parties putting the ill fated transfer behind them.

Hayden Mullins - Centre Back

Signed on a free transfer in July 2012, many had hoped he would be the answer to Birmingham's defensive frailties at the time.

This however turned out to be a nightmare signing, he never seemed in able to pass the ball to another blue shirted player, whilst also being prone to major plunders during the game which cost Birmingham numerous points.

Mullins is one Birmingham fans will want to remove from the memory of players to feature at St Andrews.

Ben Gordon - Left Back

The left back was once highly thought of as he was signed as a youngster by Chelsea in 2009 - that is the highlight of this left back's career.

Gordon has had a string of clubs, he was loaned to Birmingham in July 2012  for a season long loan, however one appearance was enough to see that Gordon was not good enough to play for Birmingham City.

He had a woeful afternoon and did not get back into the side again, rarely even making the bench before his loan was cancelled in January.

Darren Ambrose-  Left Wing

Ambrose joined Birmingham from Crystal Palace in 2012 and that was as good as it got for the Harlow born midfielder in a Blue shirt.

The former Newcastle midfielder played just four woeful games for Birmingham and made three other appearances as a substitute.

From the very first moment of his debut where he gave the ball away and failed to track back where the opposition scored, he was never going to have a successful spell at St Andrews.

Alexander Hleb - Centre Midfield

Alexander HlebAlexander Hleb

The midfielder once claimed that joining Birmingham City was the worst decision he ever made, well I am fairly certain that many Blues fans feel the same about him.

The attacking midfielder went on loan to Birmingham from Barcelona and clearly thought he was better than his actual ability, and came with an attitude and never really fitted into St Andrews.

He made 13 appearances, scoring one goal before his loan spell ended.

Brian Howard - Central Midfield

Howard joined Birmingham and well he was more of a squad filler than a first team recruit, and his meagre four starts in his short spell soon showed he was out of his depth.

He gave maximum effort but it just fell short of real quality and that does qualify him for this team of Birmingham XI.

Howard showed great attitude during his spell at St Andrews, though he just never quite cut the mustard in a Blue shirt.

David Bentley  - Right Wing

David Bentley

Bentley had a short spell at St Andrews and did himself no favours, and was not in any way shape or form liked by the Birmingham fans.

He only managed nine games for the Blues and they were truly poor performances - his attitude in a Birmingham shirt was awful.

The most memorable thing he did was storm out of a relegation match because he was on the bench, so that tells you all you need to know about Bentley and his career at Birmingham.

He was talented but never cared about playing for the club, and seemingly just tried to show off for the TV cameras.

Nikola Zigic  - Striker

zigiccc

The Serbian had moderate ability and did score 33 goals in four years at St Andrews - he was an average player.

What gets him into this squad was his attitude, during the majority of his time at Birmingham he complained, never chased a lost cause, and treated training like an optional extra rather than a necessity.

He will not go down in Birmingham folklore as a legend.

Marcus Bent - Striker

benttt

A natural goalscorer, so when he signed for Birmingham they thought they would be getting a deadly front man.

However this turned out to be one of those moves that just did not work for either the player or the club, and after three seasons, Bent parted company with the Blues having only managed 16 games and three goals.

The main reason he is on the list was work rate or lack of it, which helped him warm to the Birmingham faithful.

Birmingham City fans have your say........ Do you agree with our team? Who should be on the list and why? Is there anyone from this list who does not deserve to be in our Birmingham City worst XI? Leave your comments in the box below!
