Sheffield United have faced an exile from the Premier League in the last decade, but they were one of the teams to feature in the very first season of the league.

The Blades have spent the majority of their existence fluctuating between the first and second tiers of English football, but have surprisingly only spent three seasons in the Premier League.

Since their relegation in 2007, the Sheffield club have barely looked like returning, despite a couple of teams who looked like they may buck the trend.

United spent six years in League One, until Chris Wilder came home to his boyhood club and took them back to the Championship.

When in the Premier League, some memories will live long in the memory for United fans, but others will leave a bitter taste.

Having being promoted the season prior, United competed in the Premier League for the 2006/07 season and looked to establish themselves in the top flight under Neil Warnock.

It wasn’t to be, and Blades were relegated on the final day of the season in dramatic fashion when Wigan beat them to achieve safety.

There have only been a handful of Steel City derbies in the top flight since its been known as the Premier League, and many have ended in draws.

One didn’t. Wednesday beat United 3-1 in 1994 with goals from Mark Bright, Andy Pearce and Gordon Watson.

It was an embarrassing day for Blades, and because it was the only win in the derby in the Premier League, Owls fans still have bragging rights.

In 1994, Sheffield United were relegated and like 2007, it was on the final day of the season.

United hadn’t been in the bottom three all day, and were four places above the drop zone at half time, in one of the best relegation final days of all time.

Blades lost to Chelsea in the last minute and were duly relegated to the second tier.
