In recent years, like a lot of lower league sides, Cheltenham Town have had a new squad every season.

A flurry of free agents on one-year deals and loanees are signed as the players from the previous season leave. One of the recruits last season was Ryan Broom. He'd just turned 23 and was signed last summer after his release from Bristol Rovers.

Naturally a right-sided winger, Broom has been used as a right-back, a wing-back on both wings and in central midfield while at Cheltenham. While first-choice right wing-back, Sean Long, spent a large majority of last season injured, Broom filled in on the right of Duff's 3-5-2 and was impressive.

His strong form attracted interest from Burton Albion in League 1 who reportedly placed a bid in January for the Welsh midfielder. His form dropped in the second half of the season, possibly being affected by the interest in him.

Through last season, he scored two and assisted four goals. That's 0.18 goal contributions per 90 minutes, a solid contribution for a wing-back in an average side. Five of the six-goal contributions came before January.

He's started this season brightly, getting 4 goals and 3 assists in 795 minutes from central midfield (0.79 per 90). Although he's over-performing his expected goals and this output isn't sustainable, his impact to Cheltenham's start to the season has been massive.

Broom is an excellent athlete with explosive pace, high work rate and good use of feints and changes of direction. From midfield, he's able to drift into wide areas and support wing-backs. He can also carry the ball well and provide late runs into the box.

There's no doubt that Broom will be attracting interest from higher-level clubs. As Cheltenham look to push for promotion, they'll be hoping they'll be able to keep hold of the Welsh midfielder as the club also tries to progress.

In May, Cheltenham secured him on a new deserved two-year deal. Considering his form in the new season, he has clearly reacted well to the new contract and is enjoying his time at the club.

Broom is ambitious and has spoken about his dream of playing for Wales. The club and Michael Duff are also ambitious and want to climb the pyramid despite their financial restrictions. Cheltenham are building a very capable squad and holding onto their key players such as Broom, Hussey, Raglan and Boyle.
