The unsung hero who has been crucial to Wolves’ promotion push

Published

Wolves have had an outstanding season so far and they boast several players who have made massive contributions.

The likes of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota have justifiably taken most of the attention after backing up their high-profile moves with superb, consistent performances.

And, whilst no-one would doubt just how key they have been to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, there’s one man who has also made a big impact that has perhaps gone unnoticed.

Even out of the three-man defence that he plays in, Ryan Bennett is still an unsung hero compared to the imperious Willy Boly and transformed Connor Coady.

Yet, the ex-Norwich man has been a commanding figure for the Black Country side since making the move on a free in the summer.

The 27-year old arrived at Molineux at around the same time as Santo and many wondered if the Portuguese boss had even been involved in his signing.

Bennett was restricted to the Carabao Cup fixtures early on before making his first start against Burton in late September.

Even then, it wasn’t until the 31 October against his old side at Carrow Road that the imposing centre-back would get a run in the team.

Since that night, Bennett has been a near ever-present and responded with assured performances from the right-hand side of the three man defence.

Any concerns about his lack of pace in wide areas have been dismissed thanks to his fine positional play and he has been dominant against most opponents.

All in all, Bennett has made 20 starts and Wolves have kept 16 clean sheets in that time. He also scored the amazing winner against Bristol City deep into stoppage time that could be viewed as a season-defining moment.

Wolves have a team full of talent from across the world and hit the headlines for their summer spending that brought some outrageously talented player to Molineux – but the impact of the free transfer from Norwich should also be recognised.
